What are you reviewing? Senegal Parrots.
Where did you buy or find it? Breeder, sometimes found in "rescues" and pet shops
What was your experience with it? 10 years living with 2 sassy smart beautiful girls.
Would you buy it again/recommend to others? Yes! but only if my girls had passed away.
I Love Senegals. My first Senegal is the reason I fell in love with birds. I was so amazed how smart and emotional this tiny creation was. I had been raised with the idea that birds were to look at in a cage. Here was this amazing personality who loved to go everywhere with me and do anything to get attention (which made her very easy to train). She learned tricks, speaks in a tiny voice and traveled easily.
Senegals are relatively quiet as parrots, can learn a few phases and are easy going with strangers
Great size for most people and can easliy be kept in an apartment.
The only down side has been (both my) Senegals are very jealous of all other birds.
She growls and tries to bite them even if they are bigger than her. TOES have been lost! This seems to be fairly common in the breed. A jealous bird can bite VERY hard.. But there are usually lots of signals before blood is drawn. They are very free with their emotions (growling , pinning, fluffing the feathers).
When a Sennie is mad at you .. You will know it.
IMO Sennies are a better fit for a lot of folks than some of the more colorful conures new bird owners are often directed to. The quieter voice alone is a big plus.
If you want a life long friend who is very loyal with a great sense of humour consider a " Sennie"
An excellent resource is Mattie Sue Athen's " Guide to Senegals "
