Parakeets, known as budgerigars in their native Australia can make a great pet for someone interested in getting started with parrots. Here are a few thoughts to consider

Messy. Seed eaters, they shuck their seed and get chaff everywhere.
Standoffish. Without a lot of interaction, they can be uncomfortable with humans .
Shorter time commitment. Your parakeet if well-cared for and lucky might live to be 18 years-old, but this is a short time period compared to the 50 or 60 years you can expect from some of the larger parrots
Domestic. About as close to domesticated as parrots get. Unlike most other parrot species, these little guys have been bred in captivity for a long time for size, color and heartiness
Noisy, but tiny lungs. They are noisy, but nothing compared to a macaw.
Talkers. A solitary male may just talk...in fact it's a parakeet that holds the record for the largest "vocabulary" .. although why the best talkers always have an accent is beyond me..."You talkin' to me, Charlie? Cheeky monkey!"
