Fr. John O'Malley, pastor at St. Francis Mission at the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming, is on the way to a meeting when his car breaks down in the snow. As he's walking for help, he finds a body partially hidden by the snow.

When he gets to a phone and calls the sheriff, they return but the body has been moved. This becomes an area of unrest to Indians who think a Ghost Walker is a body that is not at rest between heaven and hell due to something in their lives.

Fr. O'Malley is also informed that there is a plan to sell St. Francis Mission to make way for a community center and that the Arapahos have asked the the community center be build on the site of St. Francis.

Fr. John thinks that the dead man is a young man named Marcus. Fr. John sets out to discover what happened.

In the reservation, there is a well done reference to those who want to be modern and create jobs while others want history to be maintained and the traditions to stand as they are.

This is a well written, smoothly plotted novel as Fr. John examines what is going on, including drugs, alcohol abuse and the need for jobs.

Very entertaining.
