Love/Hate Relationship with a Building

  • Mar 29, 2010
My first day of school at LMU started with a class in UHall. Not thinking much of it, I parked in the underground parking beneath the building and took the elevator up to class. As soon as I stepped out of the glass doors leading to the atrium I felt like a kid in a candy shop. After attending San Francisco State University where all of the buildings were dirty and old and then Marymount College where all of the buildings had maybe 5 rooms in them, I was left breathless seeing this large beautifully constructed building for the first time. With granite floors, trees in the  middle of the walk way, huge escalators and its own Starbucks I was almost convinced I was in the remake of Richie Rich rather than standing in the building where 90% of my future classes would be.

Later that day I went back to the escalator to go to my car and I couldn't find it. I tried P1...nope then P2 nope again... finally P3 and my car was there! As I proceeded to exit the parking structure I almost got hit by someone going the wrong way and then got lost into Faculty parking. When I finally found the exit the love-at-first-sight feeling had melted away and I suddenly hated Uhall and its stupid parking structure that made no sense. Since that day I have learned the perks as well as the downfalls of this ginormous building, which has created my love/hate relationship with it.

Reasons why it is awesome: It has a restaurant (The Crimson Lion), a dining hall (Roskis) AND  a cafe (which makes the most delicious chocolate croissants in the world). It has escalators in the middle and on one far side, so no matter where you are in the building you can be lazy and not take the stairs. Its absolutely beautiful with gorgeous views of Marina Del Rey. It has an awesome courtyard with a bad ass fountain to just chill at between classes. It has its own mini bookstore that you can buy anything from... seriously ANYTHING. LMU attire, cold medicine, snacks, school supplies they have it and the old lady that works there is always blasting and singing oldies that is sure to put you in a good mood for the rest of the day. There's always a parking spot.

Reasons why it sucks: The escalators are always broken, so being lazy is sometimes not an option. The coffee at the cafe sucks butt; I don't think they know what a coffee filter is. When you have class at the far end and your next class is in St. Rob's you will never be on time because you have to walk a half a mile just to get out of the building. It's always super cold because they crank the air conditioning up way too high. So when you dress for the 80 degrees weather outside, you are sitting in class freezing. The bathrooms are hidden in secret corridors that are impossible to find, so its sucks when its your first day of schoo land you really have to go but there is no bathroom in sight.

Though the things that suck about UHall REALLY suck, I still don't think they override the good things. Like any good relationship no matter how much the other person messes up and makes you pissed off, at the end of the day you still love them and always go back for more.

Every semester I do my best to not get any classes scheduled in u-hall because I hate it, but this is a very balanced review in which I can't argue with your pros. The thing that pisses me off the most about U-hall are labyrinth mazes within the different departments and trying to figure where the teacher's offices are within them.

Whoa, jealous!  Looks and sounds awesome!  I went to SFSU, too, and yeah, some of the buildings are pretty grody.  I was lucky enough to have most of my classes in the newer lecture hall, though.  Escalator broken all the time? ....Well, at least you have that option once in a while! :P  Thanks for sharing, Michelle!
