It has been over 33 years since the men’s basketball team from Loyola Marymount University has traveled across town to beat the Trojans from the University of Southern California. Yet, on a cool autumn afternoon in downtown Los Angeles the LMU Lions defeated the USC Trojans on the Trojans home court of the Galen Center.
The date was November 21, 2009 and the stakes were high. LMU have started a new season coming off one of the worst seasons in the nation having a 3-28 record. Yet the Lions were not scared to take on USC, they were excited and ready. The game started off very energetic with the Lions finishing off the first half strong. The Lions maintained a steady 2 to 3 possession lead on the Trojans for the first half but went into the locker room at halftime down by a couple points.
Into the second half, the Trojans took off, leaving the Lions in their dust. The Trojans at one point during the second half had a 12 point lead on the Lions but it was late in the second half when LMU tied up USC 58-58 followed by a beautiful 3 point shot from Lions’ Sophomore Jared DuBois that would allow the Lions to lead for the remainder of the game. The Lions went 6 for 6 at the free throw line to eventually beat the USC Trojans 67-59 in a historical win for LMU Basketball.
Being that this season for the LMU Lions is the 20th anniversary of the great 1989-1990 team with Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers that went to the sweet sixteen, this is a perfect season for the LMU Lions to get their basketball program back on track. With new transfers and injured players recovered, the Lions might not “Go All The Way” but they will definitely be the comeback team for the 2009-2010 season. GO LIONS!
Since becoming a faithful Lion in 2005, I have had a love/hate relationship with our basketball team. I attended more games then the majority of the student body, mostly because I was an active member of ASLMU and the Loyolan, and I knew when there would be free bandanas and tee shirts to be passed out. There were some good times (rushing the court), great times (winning over Gonzaga) and really sad times (getting our asses kicked by Gonzaga) Part of the reason why I loved going to the games so … more
I am a transfer student and I have only been at LMU for a year, so I'll be honest, I don't know too much about the basketball team, its players or their track record. I do know however how much of a blast I had at every game I went to this past year. At the other two colleges I have attended I never went to basketball games, probably because neither of them had basketball teams so I had no prior experience of college related sports. However, when I got to LMU I started going to the basketball … more
Experience Some of my favorite memories from being in college. Great last season(beat USC and Notre Dame on the road, and Gonzaga at home). The Lions will be even better this year. Max Good and crew has really turned this team around and the school and administration are behind this team. Best/Worst Part Best=Everything. Recommendation Go to every game you can. They are fun and free … more
