Why everyone should join Twitter. Yes, that means you!

When I first heard about Twitter, I really didn't get the appeal. Who really cares what I'm doing? It took me months to warm up to Twitter and to figure out why it was worth my time and attention. Why? When you first join, you have no followers so it feels like you are talking to yourself. It probably didn't help that the first time I checked it out the search function was down, so finding fellow Twitter users was nearly impossible. But I decided to stick with it and now that I have given it a chance, I'm addicted!

What I discovered is that my initial observation was true -- no one does care what you are doing every minute of the day unless you're MC Hammer and apparently still have a fan base. But for regular people, it's a great tool to find out what's going on in the world in real time. The best part, you don't have to sort through a bunch of uninteresting news, you are in complete control of who you follow.

My biggest complaint about Twitter is that you kind of have to figure it out on your own. For me, the most helpful discovery (thanks to @Trontastic for his remarkably helpful reviews) was search.twitter.com and twitterfall.com. Once I found these great tools, I started searching for terms of interest and built up a good set of people to follow. For me, the most exciting part is when I hear about a new health trend before it hits the news feeds. It's great to be able to share observations and tips throughout the day and connect to other people who share similar interests. Even better, it forces me to condense my thoughts into a 140 word sentence, which is not my usual communication style (as you can tell from the length of this review)!

For all the other health and wellness obsessed people out there, here are some good people to follow:

  • Lunch_com - for updates on site activity and new features, plus you can post links to your Lunch reviews to share them with your followers!
  • BestofLunch - where we highlight the very best reviews on Lunch, maybe you'll even see your own!
  • nytimeshealth - for healthy recipes and health news
  • Gaiam - for yoga tips & giveaways
  • LATimeshealth - for the latest health news
  • msnbc_health - for generic health news that is blatantly obvious like,  "Depression hurts women's hearts" or "Want to feel younger? Get moving" (those are actual headlines, believe it or not)
  • healthyrache - a little self-promotion doesn't hurt ;)

I think Twitter has a long way to go before it's perfect, but it's definitely worth giving it a try. Sign up today!

So, is Twitter free? I didn't see where it said when I went to the site's home page.
May 21, 2009
Yep, it's free!
May 21, 2009
Good to know. Everything's so much better when it's free, especially when you've got no money like me. ;)

May 13, 2009
no, not yet, but knowing you, you'll probably convince me! ;)
May 13, 2009
Yep. I'm pretty good at that, LOL. Join, try it for a week ... and if I'm right, you might just change your mind! :)

I am forced to agree with FoodDude on this one. I think of it as yet another distraction for people. I am not saying that everyone who uses Twitter abuses it(uses it every minute of everyday) and there are people who use it to keep in contact with people, but I feel we already have that through Facebook or if people still use myspace. Great review though! :)

Are you on Twitter yet? I was not a fan at all at first and had a similar opinion, but now I'm hooked. As a writer, it is a remarkably helpful tool to connect with other writers and people who share my interests. I use Facebook to keep in touch of my friends and Twitter to hear what's going on in the world of health and wellness and connect with others who share my interests. That is something that is truly unique to Twitter. I think it can be used to be productive, believe it or not, but for many others it can quickly become a distraction! :)

I just ran across an article on personality types on Twitter. http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/parti...tter_personality_types/

Very interesting. I think I'm the "messenger" type, at least that's the goal! Thanks so much for passing this on! :)

Thanks. I am a TWIT but I don't mess with it very often. I need to. Thanks for the inspiration. Look for me to stalk you at Twitter.: )

I agree! everyone should be on twitter!

I have heard of this site but I haven't really checked it out. Maybe I should, your write up makes it sound very intriguing. Thanks for the details!

Thanks for the twitterfall info b/c I've had some questions about tweeter features and haven't been sure exactly where to go! I am quickly becoming a twitter addict though- it is such a good way to get information!

Personally I see Twitter as another distraction in our digital world due to texts, emails, etc., there are already clamoring for our time and attention. However after reading your review, I like how you use it as a tool for inspiration based off of other people's thoughts. Interesting

Don't knock it until you try it! ;)

Twitter seems fun but I'm still warming up to it. My greatest qualm is with how it can be seen as contributing to the decline of writing as an art form with its limits on how much one can write. Email, instant messaging, and now texting are already eroding writing as a skill and as something that can be perfected, and I fear that tweets will add to that decline as well.

I see your point. Many people have given up their blogs for Twitter. For me, Twitter has become a great source of ideas that actually inspires me to write more on my blog or here on Lunch. There are some day to day observations that might otherwise be too short for a blog entry, and for that, Twitter is a pretty useful tool. Don't give up yet! Check out search.twitter.com and twitterfall.com and your experience will be 10 times better! :)

After reading Kitty_Salinas' micro review I though it would be helpful to share how I deal with the over tweeters or TMI'ers. Below is my six step program that I have been using for a few weeks and it seems to help.     Stop sending them to your device via SMS (in my case the iPhone), they talk way too much to be constantly notified of their updates... (See step 5) Create and use Twitter lists to segment the people you follow into smaller more relevant groups of people. …

I have a love-hate relationship with twitter.  Everything about twitter is a catch-22 to me.  On the one hand, it's kind of creepy that the entire interweb has the capability of seeing me update on the go, as well as the fact that it sends notices to twitter members who choose to be updated on my status, it's also, well, simply put, FUN.  As well as convenient and super easy to update.    Pros  -It's fun to update!  Currently, it can be updated through …

I joined Twitter over a year ago because my friend insisted on it. I didn't understand what it was. It was explained to me as "like the facebook status all the time".  I joined it, then got overwhelmed when he had his friends follow me. I was thrown into the world of "tweets" and replies and tweet ups. Only I didn't know what any of it meant.  I thought it was silly. "Do these people really care that I just got out of class?"     Then I deleted my account. (Only …

King (CNNbrk) lost out to Kutcher! The 1st to cross 1 million followers, that is. Oprah is tweeting now. What next? Obama too?! Well, looks like Twitter is now officially mainstream! Better march your way to twitterland and start tweeting, or is that twittering? ...         Behind the scene:         P.S. I'm trying to keep this review short and sweet, the very notion of a tweet! Do check out the videos if you'd like to explore …

I'm not afraid to admit it, I'm completely addicted to Twitter.     In case you haven't read the other reviews, and never took the time to check out twitter.com; Twitter is an online communication tool that allows you to post a "micro-blog" post of only 140 characters or less.     I started using Twitter about a year ago but it took me a few months to realize the potential that this tool has. One thing is for sure, I can tell why some may hear about the buzz, …

OK, maybe I lied a little in my review title. I kind of get why people would use Twitter, if they're the type to want to follow their favourite celebrity or just want to get the odd news snippet, but apart from that, I simply don't get the appeal. I can't be accused of not giving it a go as I've tried twice. Two times I have logged into Twitter with the sincere intention of joining in with the fad and following my favourite celebrities such as Stephen Fry, Charlie Brooker and David Mitchell; but …

Who would have thought 140 characters would have changed the landscape of Social Networking? Everyone seems to be using Twitter. Celebrities, politicians, television channels, spammers, you name it they're probably on Twitter or working out a plan to use it.      I didn't get Twitter when I first got an account. It's got a learning curve that's curiously harder to grasp than I thought. I'm an avid Twitter user and for a number of reasons.      I refused to …

The word sounds so funny to me. Tweet. Back in 2008 we as a world fell into this craze called Twitter.  It has actually been around a lot longer than that but gained popularity then.  I have mixed feelings on Twitter because I feel it can hurt someone but on the other side of things, make someone very successful.  Do I have a twitter account.  Yes, for website publicity.  A personal twitter account. No.  I will admit that I used to have a personal …

When I first heard about Twitter - I'll admit - I was hesitant to sign up. I just didn’t see the appeal or value in using this IM-based social networking and microblogging service with all the other alternatives out there (i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.). And I just couldn’t fathom why anyone would give a hoot…uh…tweet as to what I was doing? I’m not Angelina Jolie or an American Idol. I’m just a simple girl, with extraordinary goals.      …

if you use it right...
twitter's value is all dependent on how you use it. some people follow just celebrities and news feeds, and receive value from the service that way. i, personally do not see that as beneficial.       however, if you find people that are in your field, vocation or hobby, and actually use the service to interact with those groups of people, you can gain valuable connections.       i also don't think twitter is for everyone. i only really started enjoying …

About this website

Wiki

Twitter is a micro-blogging service that allows users to update with text messages of up to 140 characters in length. Users can also read updates from others by going to users' pages or by "following" them. "Following" allows updates from others to arrive automatically in a feed on a user's Twitter homepage. Twitter functionality is similar to that of Facebook's "status" feature, and both can by synced via Facebook status settings.

Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams and launched in early 2006. The site later won a South by Southwest Award in the blog category in March 2007. By mid-2008, Twitter featured over 3M accounts.

In addition to its functionality as a microblogging service, Twitter also features several social networking elements, including public lists of members who are following a user's updates and those who each user is following (although both of these features may be set to private). Twitter also offers a public profile, a scraping mechanism to find and invite people a user knows through email accounts, and a minimally customizable page.
