The top 25 most powerful film characters in film history

  • May 8, 2010
A character in a film is what makes a movie it is also what makes it powerful and memorable to me I think some character destroy a film and others make a film so memorable and powerful that they transcend the film itself and become immortalized as figures in pop culture. this is my list dedicated to some o f cinema's most powerful characters.
Charles Foster Kane
The most powerful, egotistical and most greedy character to ever grace the screen Charles Foster Kane was and still is the greatest megalomaniac to ever have been put to film the only thing that can top his greed his lust for power and his egomaniacal ways is his self-centered attitude. Kane is the type of man who does not stop to get what he wants or what he thinks he deserves. Kane is a wild man and is prone to doing outlandish things for instance when he ran for Governor and lost due to his affair with a chorus girl but that didn't stop Kane for trying to get more power and more money. Kane is what you call a self-loving, money-grubbing jackass. Now you are probably wondering why this character made no.1? It is all thanks to Orson Welles audacious performance as this flawed shallow man hat makes him so memorable and so powerful to the point that when you hear his name said you instantly know what movie he is from and whom he is. Charles Foster Kane's a character who defined a generation, who defined a decade and stands today as one of the golden eras most influential and most feared characters.
Michael Corleone

Al Pacino is know as one of films greatest actors he is know for many fantastic performances including his Oscar winning portrayal of an overbearing blind Lt. Colonel in Martin Breast's "Scent of a Women". However, before Pacino became a huge star and then subsequently fell from grace he first made his mark as the son and replacement to Don Vito Corleone Pacino delivered a performance that would later be recognized as legendary and brilliant. In addition, under the watchful eye of Francis Ford Coppola Mario Puzo's successor to Don Vito is a character that is one of the most feared and respected characters to grave the silver screen.

Darth Vader
out of all the characters on this list and out of all the film characters in film history no villain is more memorable or recognizable than the infallible dark lord of the Sith Darth Vader. Darth Vader was and still is a force to be reckoned with ever since he first made his appearance in "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" he has both been feared by many ever since.

What did you think of this list?

I noticed that while most of the people you chose were big because of their badness, or tough guy persona's, you listed Benjamin Button. I love that film myself, I just would like to ask since that one is so very different from the rest.

I loved the film and the character Benjamin Button just makes such an impression on you that after the film is over you really get the feeling that you knew him that he was a friend and in the end you feel sorry for what happens to him.

I have to agree with that! I still am trying to get over the backward progression, but the film was so amazingly done that you don't really dwell on that as much as what an incredible person he was.
