Sushi Bei is a great place to go for sushi if you are looking for a traditional experience with high quality fish for a reasonable price. Allow me to break down these three attributes:
Traditional experience - This is not the loud "party" atmosphere you may be familiar with at larger sushi bars closer to the beach. Sushi Bei provides a very low-key, almost quiet atmosphere. It is a great place to go if you are interested in having a conversation with one or two people over a nice meal. They have recently modified the seating in this small establishment. There is one large table that can accommodate a party of 6-8, a number of smaller two person tables and a small sushi bar with about 6 seats. So this is not the place to bring a large group. The sushi chefs are attentive, but unobtrusive.
High quality fish - Being a traditional sushi bar catering to a largely native clientele, you will not find low quality fish or be served anything that looks like it has been behind the glass for a day or two. The fish is fresh daily and high quality cuts. If you are interested in one of the less traditional sushi novelty rolls, they will make them for you upon request. But they tend to server more traditional cut rolls and hand rolls. Natto maki and ume shiso maki are two of our favorite traditional cut rolls. You will probably get a blank stare if you try to order one of these down by the beach or at a cheap, knock-off sushi bar. We also like to ika somen and appreciate the freshness of the squid, as well as the quality of the preparation.
Reasonable price - Sushi is never cheap. Uncooked fish needs to be of the highest freshness if it is not going to cause sickness. So I don't look to skimp when I go out for sushi. At the same time, I don't look to get ripped off either. Many sushi places will price their sushi for one piece instead of two, in order to disguise inflated prices. Or other prices will have standard pricing but be very stingy on the amount of fish that is actually delivered. Sushi Bei does not play these games. You will get two pieces of sushi with a generous cut of fish for a reasonable price. I appreciate this and always feel confident that if I order something off the menu I won't be taken for a ride. They also have more traditional daily specials as well, to add to the variety and value of the experience.
My wife and I have been coming to Sushi Bei for over 15 years. Chef Aki is always here to greet us with a smile and provide a great sushi experience for us. If you are looking for a nice evening to converse with a good friend over great sushi, I am confident you will be quite pleased with Sushi Bei.
