Every year, my son chooses to have his birthday dinner at Versailles. The restaurant in Manhattan Beach is one of four locations for this family owned chain begun in 1981. The building and decor at this location is a little tired and worn, but atmosphere is not why you eat at Versailles. You come to Versailles for friendly service and excellent Cuban food.
The menu is diverse (pork, chicken, beef, vegetarian, and sea food with additional daily specials) and the dishes are authentic, but our family has a particular favorite. We have tried the savory Ropa Vieja and other dishes, but we always seem to come back for the Bistec de Pollo, "tender chicken breast grilled to perfection topped with garlic sauce and garnished with white onions" (#7A on the menu). In our party of six, it is not uncommon for us to order 5 or even 6 #7A entrees. We like it so much, no one wants to share! :-) All of the entrees are served with black beans and rice and fried plantains, so no matter what you order you will be served authentic Cuban comfort food.
This location has a large dining area that is perfect to accommodate large parties. It is rarely full, so you can usually just pop in and get seated right away. If you are looking to enjoy good Cuban food for a reasonable price, Versailles is a great place to go in the South Bay. And don't forget to try the Bistec de Pollo!
