A Unique Blend of Japanese and Hawaiian

King's Hawaiian is another South Bay original restaurant that creates a unique variety of dishes by combining two different ethnic cuisines (see also my review of Spoon House).  At King's Hawaiian, you'll find a blending of Japanese and Hawaiian styles with more traditional American food available as well.

The restaurant itself has a 60's coffee shop ambiance with an Hawaiian decor, creating a welcoming yet casual atmosphere.  The tables are placed in close proximity to one another, so you won't be able to have much of an intimate or romantic conversation.  But it is a great place for families and large parties to be seated together.  There is also counter seating available if you want to drop in for a solo meal.

Some of the dishes are quite unique.  For example, this may be one of the few restaurants that actually offers dishes made with Spam on the menu.  Spam Musubi and Saimin (Hawaiian style noodles) is probably one of their most popular dishes, but I am not a huge fan of Spam.  My personal favorite is the Chicken Katsu Curry served Loco Moco style.  The curry is a traditional Japanese dish, although the curry sauce is sweeter here than you will find at most Japanese restaurants, and the Loco Moco style adds two fried eggs "over easy" to give it a special Hawaiian style twist.

There are a number of rice bowl type dishes that are served in both large and lunch portions.  And if you want to stay away from noodles and fried rice, they have a number of burgers and traditional sandwiches (e.g. club and BBQ pork) available.  Being a Hawaiian restaurant, you can also enjoy various teriyaki and seafood dishes as well.  So you won't be at a loss for choices from a Japanese, Hawaiian, or even American perspective.

This is a fun place to enjoy a casual meal with very generous portions of flavorful Japanese-inspired Hawaiian food.

In addition to the restaurant, you will find a full service bakery here as well.  You can special order a decorated cake or simply stop in to purchase some fresh tarts and sweet Hawaiian bread.
