If its good enough for Seth McFarlane...

I've been to Beaches twice now. I hated Beaches before I had even been there.

I know plenty of college age folk frequent this bar, and I knew it was the type of place I didn’t want to spend my time and money on. I actually never even went while I was a student.

First of all, there is a cover charge. $5 for guys AND girls. I’m sorry, but I am not interested in paying a cover for mediocre anything. If I was paying for really yummy drinks, good service, a killer view, awesome décor, REALLY cute guys (good looking people in general) or a great DJ, that’s fine. But Beaches offers none of that.

The bar is always crowded and the staff is rude and inattentive. It takes forever to get a drink. Apparently they don’t like designated drivers because the bartender looked SUPER annoyed when I bothered her for a Sprite with lime.

One of the people I was with got his beer knocked out of him, and the waitress comes up and goes “DID YOU JUST SPILL THAT BEER??” – Um.. yes, he did. It happens a lot. There are tons of intoxicated people, sometimes drinks get spilled.

Besides the fact that the staff is unpleasant, the real reason people go to Beaches is so they can dance, right? Well, the dance floor is always crowded, in a good way, but the songs aren’t really booty-shakin worthy.

I have a real problem with DJs who call themselves DJ’s and put on an Ipod playlist. Or wait for one song to end, before starting a new one. This DJ, was actually using CD’s, and played the most random mix of songs. The dance floor would be excited for Gaga or Rihanna, but then get bummed out with some wack 80’s songs. It was almost like he was in a glass box and having his own personal dance party, without any regard that he was playing music for 100+ people.

The tipping point for me, was when he started to play Hypnotize (a personal favorite) and I was like, finally! Great dance song…and he goes and ruins it by playing Blame it on the Alcohol over the beat. And he had ALREADY played that song earlier. Ugh.

Beaches also lacks any sort of atmosphere, besides a hazy must of sweaty fraternity boys.

But I guess it can’t be all bad right? he last time I was here, I heard a rumor that Seth McFarlane (Family Guy Multi-Billionaire) was at the bar. What? Of all the places in LA what in the world was a guy like Seth McFarlane doing at Beaches?? Well, we did a once around the bar, and a quick run upstairs and he was nowhere to be found. Two hours later as it was time to leave, my friend goes “OMG you will NEVER BELIEVE who I was just TALKING TO!”

She pulled me and my bf upstairs and we see Seth, chilling in the doorway, talking to some girl. He seemed aggravated and not too happy he was here. No one was gawking or crowding him (besides us of course.) I doubt many people know what he actually looks like.

I don’t frequent MB after hours spots often, but there HAS to be a better option down here, right?

Spot on with the review but I would have given them a -3! Their food sucks too! It's such a great location, if only someone else would buy it and turn it into "The Happenin' MB Spot"

i couldn't agree more aria. it's such a waste of a great location. please don't give up on Manhattan Beach because Beaches. There plenty of other fine spots depending on your mood. here's my list of downtown Manhattan Beach restaurants and you'll notice i included Beaches on this list... at the bottom.

A group of us met Luis Gonzalez there once, then had dinner with him at The Kettle when he was new to town and playing for the Dodgers.   Really random... he probably felt lost :)

A disgrace of an establishment. Overheard a tourist from the Midwest say it was too "ghetto". How is that possible?

: ( waste of amazing view. terrible service, below average food. shame it's not the cornerstone of the MB food scene this location deserves.

Should be the most happenin' place in M.B....but, it's not. Marginal food, and marginal people.

what a waste of a fantastic view. hope somebody buys it and turns it into the staple of the MB scene that it can and should be!
