Not to be Confused with Katsuya...More Mellow and a Welcome Addition to the Neighborhood

  • Apr 9, 2010

When I first heard that this restaurant was opening in Manhattan Beach, I was a little confused. I assumed that it was a branch of Katsuya and I did not think the space would support that concept. I then discovered that this is a less clubby and more mellow offering by chef Katsu-ya and is not affiliated with the SBE nightlife company. This makes sense, because Manhattan Beach already has one upscale clubby sushi restaurant that I really enjoy...Sashi. I think there is room in town for both of these restaurants because they bring different things to the table.

Izaka-Ya is a much smaller space and it does not have a full bar. It does have really great sushi at pretty reasonable prices. I have been there twice now and have been impressed with the quality of the fish on both occasions. There is also a nice selection of cooked food. Last time I was there, I had a terrific Yellowtail Collar.  In addition, they have a very affordable wine list. It is a much appreciated addition to the neighborhood since prior to Sashi, we had to drive to Hermosa for some good sushi. Now there are two places to go and they are both great. While I will continue to frequent Sashi...I am glad that Izaka-Ya has moved into town.

Great review and really good to know because I think most people assume this place is part of katsuya.

Nice addition to the MB scene. Very good. But those who say the food is better than Sashi are on drugs or have terrible taste.

The Katsu-Ya group has 4 locations in Southern California and growing. Our founder and executive chef Katsuya Uechi tied for #1 ranking for Top Food 2006 Zagat Los Angeles guide. In addition, chef Katsuya has KATSUYA by Starck restaurants with SBE Entertainment in Brentwood, Hollywood, Glendale and L.A. Live. There are plans to open more restaurants outside of Southern California. A cool celebrity hang out Hyde Lounge on Sunset Blvd's menu was also produced by no other than our chef Katsuya.
