About Me

I'm thinking Lunch.com is a pretty smart way to get recommendations -- and trying it out.  I'm a writer, blogger, mom (3 kids, 3 dogs, 2 cats) who basically has a lot of fun and approaches life with a slightly raised eyebrow.  My tastes in music are eclectic (L'il Wayne to Shawn Colvin to Gorillaz to Bach Piano Concertos or Beatles or … more

To Kill a Mockingbird
I almost feel silly reviewing To Kill a Mockingbird; has anyone not read it?      When Harper Lee was asked about To Kill a Mockingbird in 1964, she denied that it was autobiographical, …
reviewed The Philadelphia Story. January 31, 2009
The Philadelphia Story is one of those movies where it's hard to decide which element is best: the stars themselves (Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart -- who won Best Actor Oscar); the writing …

The Wall Street Journal is famous for its "keyhole approach" -- letting a small, personal perspective open the door to a broader story.  In this remarkable, simple piece, writer Ben Casselman chronicles …

Earth Friendly Products' Stain and Odor Remover
On election day recently, my 15 y/o was volunteering, going door-to-door.  A puppy followed him, limping slightly, for almost a mile.  Long story short, he brought the puppy home -- and though …

Brooks Hansen Chess Garden
This book exists in layers of story and levels of meaning like nearly no other book I have read. It has been compared to Nabokov, Poe, Arthurian legend, and Calvino - draw your own conclusions -- but …

Hi Rachel, I totally did play your Discovery Channel games, thank you very much. And I have to admit, I laughed when they popped up on my screen. VERY clever, and a great idea for discovering similarities. I'd love to tell you tha I wrote for Discovery Channel in its "While You Were Out" period -- or its "cool period," as we call it. But no. I wrote for Discovery before it was cool. I wrote for Discovery when it was geeky. I wrote for three shows, all of them tangentially about education or technology -- Best Seat in the Class (which would have been interesting, but its host was a teeny bit wooden); Champions & Challenges; Urban Education in America. I know -- I'm positive you watched them, didn't everyone? Some were actually inspiring -- in fact, my favorite school in the entire country is in South Central L.A. -- called Foshay Urban Learning Academy. I wish it were more exciting -- but it's the truth. :)
