Modern Family: "En Garde"

  • Feb 19, 2010
This episode is for all the parents out there that tried to push their kids into sports -- be careful, they might end up in figure skating and call their team "Fire and Nice". Luckily, for Jay, he got a second chance with Manny, who inherited the swordsmanship skills from his dad who "was a master swordsman. He was an artist with his sword! I mean, the way he throws the sword, I mean, he was legendary" (at least that what Gloria said).

In "En Garde" Jay and Manny started to improve on their son - step-dad relationships, and bond over fencing. As a proud dad, Jay did what every proud parent should do, create the "Who Da Manny" T-shirt, not to be confused with the "Clair and Present Danger" T-shirts he made in the past for Clair's sporting success. Although Manny had to defeat a hospital bound orphan, Jay was a very proud dad and showcased the trophy next to the picture of the younger Mitchell and Claire as "Fire and Nice."

Mitchell on the other hand was dealing with his own father issues, thinking he was never able to make his dad proud, and some sibling resentment at Claire for quitting the team just before the regional championship. This was the first time the show explored Mitchell - Claire relationship, and I hope the show will continue doing so. I am curious to know how was it to grow up as the kids of Jay and Dede.

The last story was about a dad who was secretly hoping his son will follow his footsteps: it seems that Phil was really hoping that Luke would excel as a realtor. While Nolan Gould is not as a great kid star as Rico Rodriguez, we did enjoy him making his dad work hard for the house sale.

Some great quotes from this episode:

Gloria: So take back your sword and go fight this sword like a bull!
Manny: Okay.
Gloria: I can't hear you.
Manny: Okay!
Jay: I can't hear you!
Manny: That's really as loud as I can go.

Mitchell: We were called "Fire and Nice." I was "Fire" because of the red hair and Claire was "Nice" because it was ironic and she wasn't.

Phil: Haley is so pretty. So she can meet someone who's the best at something
