In response to Woopak's list of horror flix of the decade I offer my own, also off the top of my head and (as usual) NOT in order of preference. I wish I could say that I have seen as many of the Asian films as he has, but alas I have not. You will notice that my list does show my preference for horror comedy and for independent, low budget films. Enjoy!
Argue if you must that this science fiction, but to me it's dark, mind-bending, funny and yes, a little bit horrifying--at least if you're afraid of giant, grotesque rabbits.
A wonderful homage to the flix of the fifties in which Michael Rooker learns the hard way that you should never pester ANYTHING that crawls out of a meterorite.
Forget all that suff you've read about how this flick is a metaphor for puberty--it's a great werewolf flick from creative friends in the frozen north...which just so happens to be a metaphor for puberty.
A brilliant film that works on two levels; on one is a mindless science fiction/horror flick, and the other is drawing comparisions between persecution suffered by the film's aliens and the apartheid the film's writer/director witnessed growing up in South Africa.
A beautifully filmed tale of a mermaid who's held captive and put on display in a freak show, only to be stolen by a greedy man who plans to take her to America. Once on board ship he learns just how dangerous she can be.
Spanish film about what happpens when a two man TV news crew and the residents of an apartment house are unexpectedly sealed off from the rest of the world.
The next logical step in the evolution of the TV reality game show from Maurice Devereaux. Contestants vie for huge prize money (and their lives) against a group of wacky weirdos aremed with axes and chainsaws.

Would you accept an invitation to a "muder" party if you found it lying in the street on Halloween? Our hapless hero does, and it does not go well.

What if Max Schreck (the actor who starred in NOSFERATU) wasn't really an actor at all but a vampire PRETENDING to be an actor pretending to be a vampire?
One of the best adaptations ever made by the HPL Appreciation Society as if it were a silent movie produced during Lovecraft's lifetime.

WW I, 9 British soldiers get separated from the rest of their company and find themselves in the forward German trenches which are inexplicable deserted. Some very scary things ensue.
A man breaks out of hell in search of his girlriend--only to be pursued by three demon bounty hunters. Low budget indie that is much better than it sounds
A young couple on a camping trip are taken hostage by a gun toting thug and his girl friend, but that's the least of their worries--all 4 wind up trapped inside an isolated gas station, their lives endangered by a bizarre parasite.

I won't even waste my time pointing out that the director of "Donnie Darko" resents his film being called a horror film or ask why "Oldboy" is considered a horror film instead of a martial arts thriller, and instead compliment you on a great list... even if our ideas about what fits into what genre don't mesh. ; )
QUEENBFLIXJanuary 19, 2010
In order for the director of DONNIE DARKO to resent having his film called a horror film I must not be the only one doing it.
I dunno, while Oldboy is certainly awesome, I really can't call it a horror film.
Now, if you're going for crazy Asian psychodramas, you can't really beat Audition. Though it's iffy on 2000 status, I'd say it counts.

It's from the 90s. I checked to make sure. I'm pretty loose about what I'll include in horror, and OLDBOY is certainly HORRIFIC which is close enough for me.
Wikipedia shows different release dates, oddly with 1999 for Canada and 2000 for Japan. I'd be inclined to go with the release date for the country of its origin. It was also included in other Best of the Decade lists, cause grey areas are awesome like that.
Kiri kiri kiri.

Didn't research it that carefully. Just typed in "Audition", looked at Wikipedia, and read "...released 1999" Didn't bother to click onto the body of the entry. Since Woopak had left it off his list that sort of added to my feeling it was of the earlier decade.
I thought this was going to be full of B-horror movies (you are QUEENBFLIX, afterall :P), but was pleasantly surprised to see some mainstream ones that I've seen before. Great list, Karen!

Good is good. There will be more familiar names on Part Two.
Great list - I haven't seen all of them since my wife hates horror and I try not to watch it on my own. :-) District 9, REC and The Orphanage were all first class. I also liked The Ring which really got to me.
QUEENBFLIXJanuary 13, 2010
Have you seen the original Japanese version RINGU?
jbeswickJanuary 14, 2010
I have - but I saw the US one first. Ringu was pretty intense stuff.
Hi QueenB. I am ashamed to admit that the only film I saw was Hard Candy. That movie was pretty shocking. It is hard to imagine that the same Ellen Page was the tough teen in that flick. I see that you titled your list Part 1. So do any of the Underworld flicks and maybe Van Helsing make your list (I am partial to Kate Beckinsdale)?
QUEENBFLIXJanuary 13, 2010
I'm afraid not. HARD CANDY was wild wan't it? I imagine it had a lot of men squirming in their seats.
Sadly I have not seen a lot of these; I really enjoyed The Host and liked District 9 better than I thought I would. I've read plenty of Lovecraft, so Cthulu sounds like a natural for me. Great list! I've done a few "favorite" movies lists. Maybe I'll do a scifi list for the last decade. May overlap a couple of yours as scifi does overlap to other genres. Sorry, I'm gabbing. Great list!

THE CALL OF CTHULHU is great. Trashie reviewed it too, way back when.
We all have our preferences and doing a list like this is pretty hard but I'll do my best. Please forgive me if I forget any titles. This comes in no … more
I am the poster child for inertia. Where ever I am is where I plan to stay FOREVER. So much so in fact that it took me decades to understand the punchline about why the chicken … more
