TOP HORROR MOVIES of 2000-2009 --Part One

In response to Woopak's list of horror flix of the decade I offer my own, also off the top of my head and (as usual) NOT in order of preference. I wish I could say that I have seen as many of the Asian films as he has, but alas I have not. You will notice that my list does show my preference for horror comedy and for independent, low budget films. Enjoy!

Argue if you must that this science fiction, but to me it's dark, mind-bending, funny and yes, a little bit horrifying--at least if you're afraid of giant, grotesque rabbits.

A wonderful homage to the flix of the fifties in which Michael Rooker learns the hard way that you should never pester ANYTHING that crawls out of a meterorite.

This would make a really nice double feature with END OF THE LINE.

Forget all that suff you've read about how this flick is a metaphor for puberty--it's a great werewolf flick from creative friends in the frozen north...which just so happens to be a metaphor for puberty.

A brilliant film that works on two levels; on one is a mindless science fiction/horror flick, and the other is drawing comparisions between persecution suffered by the film's aliens and the apartheid the film's writer/director witnessed growing up in South Africa.

A beautifully filmed tale of a mermaid who's held captive and put on display in a freak show, only to be stolen by a greedy man who plans to take her to America. Once on board ship he learns just how dangerous she can be.

Spanish film about what happpens when a two man TV news crew and the residents of an apartment house are unexpectedly sealed off from the rest of the world.

The next logical step in the evolution of the TV reality game show from Maurice Devereaux. Contestants vie for huge prize money (and their lives) against a group of wacky weirdos aremed with axes and chainsaws.

Now, if you're going for crazy Asian psychodramas, you can't really beat Audition. Though it's iffy on 2000 status, I'd say it counts.
