As we are in the back to school time of year I wanted to share some of my favorite films that have a "principal" school theme. Some movies that I heard are good such as Old School and Ten Things I Hate About You have been left off only because they are still on my to view list.
One of my favorite all-time movies. Probably Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's best roles together. Damon as the genious School janitor with Minnie Driver as his smart girlfriend who tries to help him adjust to life.

Al Pacino's diatribe against the college disaplinery board near the end of the film is classic! Frank Slater is sightless and during school break he wants a student to take him to New York one last time. Slater helps the student to become a man while the student gives Slater a point to his own existence.

The Delta's of Faber College are on double secret probation. We learned the secret behind cucumbers and bedding a MILF. An all-star cast in one of the funniest films ever made! The movie that made John Belushi a star!
Lamda Lamda Lamda and the Mews try to overcome the Alphas who do everything in their power to get them thrown out of school because they are "nerds." We learn that nerds make the best lovers because unlike jocks who spend their free time thinking of sports, nerds think of sex.

Rodney Dangerfield in his most hilarious movie as businessman Thorton Mellon who fights with Kurt Vonnegut, asks "what's a widget?", while trying to please an ultra conservative and mean Sam Kinneson.

Jack Black impersonates a teacher and transforms a class of gifted kids into a top-notch rock band while throwing all other learning out the window. He teaches them to "give it to the man."

Probably the best of the brat pack films. A group of teens must spend Saturday in detention. By the end of the afternoon they all seem to bear their souls.
A fun romp with Sean Penn as a stoned out teen who battles Mr. Hand by getting pizzas delivered to class. A lot of stars in one of their first movies including Forrest Whitaker and Judge Reinhold. And whatever happened to Phoebe Cates?

Cool list. If you havent seen them, I recommend Dazed and Confused (especially), Three O' Clock High, and Class of 1999.

Haven't seen any of these but if HBO or Starz has them I will check them out.
Phoebe Cates married Kevin Kline; I don't know much about her career lately but she starred in a modest, enjoyable film "Caraboo" that I saw a while back. She's still as beautiful as ever.
Then there's THE HISTORY BOYS which Alan Bennett adapted from his own stage play. It's about an English boys' school where the students are getting ready for the exams for Oxford etc. Mostly it's about their relationship with their gay teacher.

I never heard of that one but will have to look for it.

Bennett also wrote THE MADNESS OF KING GEORGE which is great movie if you historical pieces.

Haven't seen it but I'll look for it.

It was nominated for 4 Oscars in '94 including Best Screenplay from other source (Bennett adapting his own play), Best Supporting Actress (Helen Mirren), and Best Actor (Nigel Hawthorne).
ah..school...such fond memories of little responsibilities LOL! Loved your selections here and I am pleasantly surprised that SCHOOL OF ROCK made the cut!

I found School of Rock to be fun and a lot better than what I expected going in as flawed as it was thinking that a prestigious school doesn't know what's going on in one of its classes.
Nice list. The Breakfast Club and Fast Times are two of my favorite school-themed movies, along with Pretty in Pink. Have seen all of them several times. I also enjoyed Revenge of the Nerds and School of Rock but, for me, those were mostly one-viewing movies. I never thought of Scent of a Woman as being school themed! Then again, I've only seen it once (when it first came out in theatres), so I don't remember much--except of course for HOO-ah! :)
I first got on this blog to discuss my first passion which is books. Since I have gotten on I find that books are only a piece of this blog and I can discuss just about anything that comes to mind. It … more
