Favorite Disney Songs (Cartoons)

  • Dec 6, 2010
As a child, I've always been fascinated by these songs from Disney. This is a walk down memory lane. Enjoy...

P.S. The 2nd half of the list is from a more recent times. Newer but also as great. From here you can gauge the differences time has influenced the music of our times (in a span of almost 50 years!).
1
Some Day My Prince Will Come
1937 song to the film Snow White & the 7 Dwarfs. Composed by Frank Churchill & Leigh Harline. Sung by Adriana Caselotti.

Some Day My Prince Will Come... Indeed, some day in the future! It's been a loooooong wait, lol!
2
A Dream is a Wish your Heart makes
1950 song to the film Cinderella. Composed by Mack David, Al Hoffman & Jerry Livingston. Sung by Ilene Woods.

Sleep & Dream are two my favorite past times in life. How not to love this song? ;-)
3
Once Upon A Dream
The song from the 1959 animated fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty. Sleeping Beauty was made while Disneyland was being built. Music by Mary Costa & Bill Shirley.

It is interesting to see the progress of a girl's perception about a dream prince to today's view and take on girl-boy relationship. I don't know if it's turning for the better or worse that we are now more practical and pragmatic when it comes to relationship!
4
When You Wish Upon A Star
From the 1940 Pinocchio animation. That's 70 years ago! Mind-boggling, don't you think?
Still, sometimes the oldest is the best, as in this very case. They don't write songs like these anymore, do they?

Pinocchio is the 2nd film after the Disney success of Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. Pinocchio did win 2 Academy Awards, one being that of Best Original Score and another of Best Original Song.
5
So this is love
Another good one from Cinderella. Written by Livingston, David & Hoffman. Performed by Woods & Mike Douglas.

Many decades later, James Ingram did another version of this song.
6
Colors of the Wind
A winner of 3 awards, Academy, Golden Globe & Grammy. According to Wikipedia, "The song poetically presents the Native American viewpoint that the earth is a living entity where humankind is connected to everything in nature.".

Sang by Judy Kuhn in one version & another by Vanessa Williams, Colors of the Wind earned a single (for Williams) of 1/2 million copies in sale thereby giving her a Gold single.

The song was composed by Alan Menken and lyricist by Stephen Schwartz.

7
It's A Small World
Co written by Disney staff Robert & Richard Sherman. This song has been translated to many languages & is sung all around the world.

A very upbeat & happy tune. Think back to your childhood, haven't you ever sing this song? I had!
8
Can You Feel The Love Tonight
From the film Lion King. A more recent production by Elton John (1994).

9
Hakuna Matata
Hakuna Matata? Meaning No worries! Must be from the Aussies! Another upbeat one from The Lion King! This song is excellently presented in the Disney Theme Park The Animal Kingdom. If you haven't seen the live show, make sure you make it there!

10
Circle of Life
Theme song from the Lion King whereby it was played during the ceremony when the newborn Simba was presented to the animals of the Pride Lands. Sung by Carmen Twillie.

11
Part of Your World
From the Little Mermaid, Part of Your World (also known as Part of That World) was produced in 1989. Music was composed by Alan Menken & Howard Ashman. The singer is Jodi Benson.

EXCELLENT list, but "Kiss the Girl" from The Little Mermaid is an all time classic.

No love for I won't say I'm in Love-Hercules or Be a Man from Mulan. Sure not classics, but good songs. Damn shame.

To be specific, I haven't watched those 2 films. Thanks for the tip anyhow.
