My favorite films of 2010

  • Dec 22, 2010
It's been a shockingly bad year for cinema, literally making an avid movie-goer want to give up. The Bounty Hunter? Seriously? Grown Ups? Legion? The Wolfman? Alice in Wonderland? What a sh**heap. But digging through the sewer of 2010 films, there have been some gems...
Inception teaser poster
My favorite film of 2010, Inception was smart, suspenseful and - most of all - fun to watch. With some mindbinding ideas and James Cameron-quality action sequences, it's proof that Christopher Nolan may be the most exciting director of our generation. Although not without its detractors (and we all know that JRJ didn't like it!), at the very least it sparked conversation and interest, which is more than most of the crap did this year.

The hotel fight scene was just wonderful - best scene of the year. And so was the score.

Black Swan (2010)
Undoubtedly his best film to date, Black Swan pulls together some rare qualities that make it a classic. It's graceful, elegant, brutal, scary, beautiful and terrifying. Read woopak's excellent review, and go see it immediately (it's had a horrible box office for some reason, so help it out).

Toy Story 3
Pixar has done it again, and managed to tread the line that appeals to both adults and children. Technically flawless, the plot shows that storytelling is still alive and well in some parts of Hollywood. Interestingly enough, it's the top grossing film of the year.
See the full review, "A worthy completion of a classic trilogy".
The Art of the Steal
Don Argott's documentary is fascinating, enlightening and infuriating. Meticulously researched, it exposes the underbelly of art, fraud and politics, and gives an incredible insight into a crime that should never have happened. This should get the Best Documentary Oscar without question.
The Other Guys (2010)
It's not everyone's idea of a good time (my wife hated it), but it was the highlight of 2010 for immature humor and stupidity. The big surprise was that Mark Wahlberg is actually comically brilliant, and it's possible to write a script where almost every scene will make you laugh. Which is hard.
See the full review, "Much, much funnier than I expected. I'm still laughing...".
The Social Network
David Fincher is intriguing - he has no consistency in the style and type of movies he makes, and frequently mixes brilliance with failure. The Social Network was a wonderfully conceived film that took a fairly boring book and created one of the most eccentric, stupid, intelligent and psychopathic characters ever portrayed. Giving up special effects for storytelling, I'm starting to see Fincher as a master filmmaker.
See the full review, "A fascinating character study of a psychopath trying to fit in".
This was a nicely conceived film that did pretty much everything right. But it's also a little bland, which shows how poor the year has been for movies.
