'Louder Than A Bomb' is a documentary by filmmakers, Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel.  The subject...SLAM POETRY...But not just any Slam poetry...This is the LOUDER THAN A BOMB slam poetry competition for high schoolers, started in 2001 and held every year in Chicago.  And this is not your mama's poetry.

The film follows four Chicago high school poetry teams as they prepare to compete in the world's largest youth slam.  And I have to say ...these kids are incredible.  Their talent, their struggle, their committment is unforgettable.

Yes this is a competition, but it's not just about winning.  As one student likes to say...it's not about the points...it's about the poetry.

The students are encouraged to work together, not only with each other, but with their teachers.  We see them being critiqued. We see conflict, resolution and most of all, their passion for the words...The words they use to express their inner most thoughts, truths and feelings.  These kids hold nothing back.

We get to meet several of the young gifted poets...

Adam...who attends Northside College Prep. Adam comes from a financially comfortable Jewish family, but when he performs...You forget all that.  He's just the same as all the other competitors...Including...
.
Nova, a beautiful  half-Indian-half-African American girl who takes care of her 12 year old brother Cody, who suffers from autism, diabetes and seizure disorders and...

Nate, who's parents are recovering drug addicts...

And Lamar, the hard-edged ex football player and his team from Steinmetz Academic Center, a poor performing working class school on Chicago's far West Side.

What all these kids have in common is their profound need to tell a story...their story.  And most importantly, we see the love and respect these student have for each other and for what they create.

'Louder Than A Bomb' opened in New York City on May 18, 2011 and will be expanding to other cities. The film will also have a television premiere later this year as part of the Oprah Winfrey Network's 'OWN' Documentary Club.

This film inspired the 'Two Jews On Film' to give it a very high bagel rating and it inspired John to write and perform his own Slam Poetry piece.

Check out our video and let us know how many bagels you'd give John's performance.
