Who knew that an exploration into the lives of two minor characters from the literary masterpiece that is Shakespeare’s Hamlet could be so entertaining?
Based on the play written by Tom Stoppard the movie stars two of my personal favorite actors – Tim Roth & Gary Oldman alongside Richard Dreyfuss. Although a side on the obscure side…this is a must see if you’re a fan of Tom Stoppard, clever writing, and a fantastic buddy adventure film. The highlight here being of course the clever writing and mesmerizing chemistry between Tim Roth & Gary Oldman as the titular characters.
Both a comedy and a more covert philosophical film, it provides a fascinating look into the story of Hamlet from an outsider’s perspective and provides a fresh look at the Shakespearian tale. Whether you’re some over obsessive fan of Shakespeare or a stout denouncer of anything written that doesn’t come from some overly emotional band’s blog…this movie has something for you irregardless of the presence of some archaic language. I assure you, Tom Stoppard’s dialogue will displace any feelings of contempt you may still harbor due to traumatic experiences in your high school English class.
Spoiler….Rosencrantz & Guildenstern die at the end.
