"Revenge of the Fallen" Explodes on to Blu-ray Hi-Def!

While there aren't a lot of people who liked this film, I was a huge fan watching it in theaters.  I thought it was actually better than the first film.  Getting to watch it on Blu-ray gave me chills all over again.  For one thing, Revenge of the Fallen's score sounds so amazing on a surround sound system and along with it, the film itself.  When it comes to the picture, it's even better than what you get in the theater.  I think this is one of the main reasons film are starting to be shown with digital projection instead of film, it's a much better movie experience.  While I do have some issues with this particular release, it's still pretty amazing overall.

I read an interesting article the other day on SCIFI Wire about how Revenge of the Fallen is actually a better film to watch at home, and not because it wasn't worth the money to go see it in theaters.  I have to agree with this article.  It talked about how big ROTF was in the theaters and how much was going on on screen, making it difficult for viewers to follow.  Part of this was having to span the giant screen of a movie theater and due to this, you end of missing some things that ended up being quite confusing.  With getting to watch the film on Blu-ray, you only have to keep your eyes on the TV, and since things are smaller (in a good way), you are able to catch mostly everything on screen.  The details are also crystal clear on Blu-ray so when there's a giant robot battle let's say, you actually know who is fighting who.

My biggest issue with this Blu-ray release is the audio it was released with.  Right now, there is still a competition between DTS and Dolby Digital.  While most people would agree that Dolby has far superior sound quality, a lot of Blu-ray's are coming out with DTS-HD Master Audio instead of 5.1 Dolby Digital True HD.  This was actually very surprising because the Transformers Blu-ray came with Dolby and not DTS, leaving me wondering why they switched for the sequels release.  This is a problem because a lot of surround sound systems like mine, aren't compatible with DTS, leaving you with less surround sound.  While the audio quality is still amazing, it's nowhere near as perfect as DD True HD.  I'm actually surprised Dolby hasn't bought out DTS yet.

The Blu-ray release comes with some awesome special features which I haven't gotten around to watching yet, but if they're anything like the previous release, then they'll be amazing.  The  special features include the NEST: Transformer Data Hub which lets you get to know some of the Autobots and a Blu-ray exclusive called the Allspark Experiment.  This feature lets you virtually create your own autobot by customizing a vehicle with parts and accessories and then unleashing the power of the allspark on it.  I am actually going to try this out and when I do, I will update the review.  On the feature disc, there is audio commentary with Michael Bay, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

Overall, I am pretty satisfied with the Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray release.  If it wasn't for the DTS issue, it would be perfect, but it does make my score drop down a couple of points.  if you are a fan of either of the Transformers films, then this is a must buy.  I can't recommend it to anyone who absolutely needs perfect surround sound.  The picture is crystal clear though and I think most people will find it easier to watch on their HDTV's than they did in the theaters.  The Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray gets a 3/5.  If you would like to read my review of the actual film, than you can do so by clicking this link
