Pros: story, cast

Cons: none for me

The Bottom Line:
"It's not too late to start again
Days go by and seasons change
Nothing stays the same
Life's an endless game
Between strangers"
~Sing Out Sisters

I recently viewed Between Strangers, written and directed by Edoardo Ponti.   In a strange way it reminded me of Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her in the way the stories overlapped and intertwined, without actually being a part of each other.   It has an R rating and was nominated for six awards, winning two.

The story:
We enter the lives of three much different women.  Olivia, settled into her later years, is married to a man that is wheelchair bound.   She lives a quiet, solitary, life catering to her husband's needs and holding down a nowhere job.   Her only outlet is drawing, which her husband scoffs at, and her dreams.   As a young teen she became pregnant and gave her baby up for adoption and now longs to reunite with her and follow her dreams.

Catherine is a well-known cellist, traveling all over the world to perform.   She learns her father is to be released from prison, on early parole, and abandons her husband and daughter to track him down.  Twenty-two years before he had killed her mother and she wants revenge.

Natalia is following in the footsteps of her famous father and gets a cover on Time Magazine for her photojournalist work.   Eventually she has to come to terms with the choice she made to get her famous photograph.

All three women are at a crossroad in their lives and all must make a decision that will change them forever.

The actors:
What an incredible cast.  Sophia Loren is Olivia, still looking good at almost 80.   She appears quietly regal in this film, while still showing an intensely lonely persona to her character.  Mira Sorvino plays Natalia.  While she appears strong in some segments, she also looks lost and alone.

Deborah Kara Unger is Catherine, broken and withdrawn.  She stands alone in a crowd, a stranger in her own body.  Incredible performance.  Her father was played by Malcolm McDowell but his part was short-lived.   Also in the cast was Gerard Depardieu who was a sounding board for Olivia as she reminisced about her past and current life.

The cast, collectively, gave a great performance and singularly stood out in each of their parts.

Overall impression:
I thought each story was well portrayed and the individual actors did a great job of pulling the characters into the story.   Having separate stories that are so much alike using a common thread to make them gel together makes a great interpretation for a character driven piece.

The lighting, filming, and sound were all very acceptable.  Each woman's apartment/home reflected the same desperation they felt individually.  Overall I thought it was very well done.
