After a mid-career dip, the CB are back! Burn represents the second consecutive strong showing, coming on the heals of their best ever No Country for Old Men. Burn isn't their best ever, but it is a return to their roots, and to what made them good.    The BL (Before Lebowski) movies were a tour of the classic genres of the Great Age of cinema, centered around the theme of identity:    Blood Simple was a great noir debut about misunderstanding identity.  Raising …

They say good things come in twos, and I can’t think of a more fitting justification for this platitude than the varied body of work that is the Coen brothers’ film repertoire. Time and time again, the duo has tickled our funny bones while offering that something extra for the finicky tastes of moviegoers whose palates desire a little “oomph”.      That being said,      I hated Burn After Reading.      I mean, I …

A throw-away effort by the Coen Brothers, but Tilda Swinton takes the prize for unlikable funniness
If you enjoy sour shaggy dog stories told for the enjoyment of clever, sour people, you might like Burn After Reading...a shaggy dog story if there ever was one. It takes the easy target of Washington's shallow denizens and mixes them into the equally easy targets of CIA paranoia and serial infidelities. And all these denizens, with one possible exception, are either numbskull boobs or nasty boobs.       The Coens have given us not only a sour shaggy dog story, designed …

I would call myself a fan of the Coen Brothers. A pretty big fan actually. Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, Fargo and O Brother, Where Art Thou? are among my favourite films of all time, and I'm a huge admirer of their darker offerings like Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, No Country For Old Men and Blood Simple. Therefore, I sat down to watch Burn After Reading with great expectations. Those expectations even seemed justified by the clips I'd seen and the things I'd read about …

Coen Brother's zany comic follow up to No Country For Old Men has wacky goins on in DC with an alcohalic and his frosty wife, a philanthripist and his ornery wife and two dim gym employees getting mixed up over a lame MacGuffin. Maybe not a classic, but worth watching once.

The Coen Bros lately give us characters to care about briefly. Then they die. This is wearing thin. Their satirical schtick feels increasingly bitter rather than entertaining, and this film shows their smug insularity. A few moments such as the deadpan CIA suits as they converse hit their mark, but the actors seem as worn out as their convoluted storylines now.

Intriguing and amusing at times, but overall, I could barely keep myself focused on the screen.

Acting is great, but the way the movie is put together makes the performances all seem plastic.

Another great film from the Coen Brothers. Citics of them are simply unable to follow the story line. Carry a flow chart if your one of these people.

Pros: The way Brad Pitt drinks water      Cons: Everything else      The Bottom Line: There is no reason to consider this film no matter how much you may like any of the people involved.       Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot. Only use a command like “Burn” in your film’s title if you are sure the film is good enough for most audiences to consider the title ironic. Burn …

John Malkovitch as Ozborne Cox
The Coens seem to be following up their violent crime dramas with lighthearted comedies.  The Big Lebowski begat Fargo and now Burn After Reading begat No Country For Old Men.       Burn After Reading takes place in DC and has stories centering on divorce, infidelity, giant cups of juice, the CIA, alcoholism, internet dating, Russians, childrens books, plastic surgery, a gym called Hardbodies where hardly anyone with a hard body works there and a mysterious construction …

Oh, how I love the Coen Brothers' twisted humor. Such an ironic movie, it hurts.

Boozing CIA analyst gets demoted and his notes end up in the hands of dim Gym employees. Quirky characters are fun to watch.

I found this movie oddly enjoyable.     When I first saw its trailer on television, my first thought after learning that Brad Pitt and George Clooney would be in the movie was that it would be the kind of self-indulgent comedy they showed in Ocean's Twelve and Thirteen. However, upon learning that Tilda Swinton, John Malcovich, and Francis McDormand was in it, I became interested, then I saw Malcovich bitch-hit Pitt.     I'm no Pitt hater, but there was …

In Washington, D.C., a group of seemingly unrelated characters and a tangle of subplots makes for an entertaining, if lightweight, star-studded comedy with tragic overtones. A CIA man (John Malkovich) gets fired while his wife (Tilda Swinton) is having an affair with a playboy (George Clooney); an insecure woman (Frances McDormand)  and her  dippy co-worker (Brad Pitt) find the CIA man's memoir and try to peddle it to the Russians.     This film has all the delightful …

Burn After Reading
CIA Superior: So what did we learn from this?   CIA Officer: Um... I don't know.   Short Attention Span Summary (SASS):   1.   CIA analyst Cox (John Malkovich) has a falling out with the agency, and decides to write a tell-all memoir. 2.   His wife (Tilda Swinton) wants a divorce, and to make sure she's forearmed with his finances, she burns a copy of some of his computer files 3.   Said files fall into the incapable hands of clueless gym employees …

... of the USA since Reagan as the film Fargo was of decent, ordinary Minnesotans. I'm not being ironic, friends; I mean exactly what I wrote. "Burn After Reading" falls short of documentary realism only in being better edited than most of what happens in DC. It is the peculiar genius of the Coen Brothers to be able to sum up the essential weirdness of wildly diverse 'cultures.' They nailed LA in 'The Big Lebowsky.' They encapsulated the mythic South in 'Oh Brother.' They are to cultural anthropology …

First of all, my wife and I are big Coen brothers fans.     I watched this movie and found some of the scenes outrageously funny, but I was more ambivalent than my wife. I felt it was "reminiscent in feel" of the Big Lebowski. Then we watched the commentary, and one of the principals made the remark that it was a "comedy about old people", and it was a Eureka moment for me. Most of these characters are in some ways privileged, but they just don't enjoy it, or have sense enough …

Pros: ...     Cons: ...     The Bottom Line:   "Stop, drop and roll and touch your toes  It keeps on burnin' up, more and more"  ~Jonas Brothers         In the first place, you have to enter into Burn After Reading realizing that it probably isn't going to make sense, on the broad level, because we are dealing with the Coen brothers.  It is a little humorous, in a dark way, with some …
