I have to say I am your average-casual ‘slasher' horror film fan, and while this genre of horror isn't exactly my favorite, murderous rampaging psychos always had their charm. I've been an avid Friday The 13th fanatic since I was eight years old. It was during that time in which I was exposed to the earlier films in the series. I immediately fell in love with both the character and background story of Jason Vorhees. It was just so intriguing to me. It's been six years since Freddy Vs. It's pretty well known that I'm anti-remake, particularly when it comes to horror films. I'm not so much opposed to the idea of revisiting horror's most iconic characters—it's more a case of being disappointed that the revisiting is done mainly to appease an audience too lazy to watch the originals (I've spent some time talking to people under twenty, and if I hear one "I just can't get interested in these old movies" when referencing a film made less than 20 years ago, I may go postal. Even though this reboot of Friday the 13th didn't sit that well with fans of the previous two or three films (the rest are pretty bad), I enjoyed it a lot. Sure, people are going to say that there was too much sex in it or it wasn't as scary as the original, but if you think about it, this new take on the character of Jason and the Friday the 13th films is pretty close to being what horror movies used to be back in the 70's, 80's and very early 90's. There has to be atleast one film per year that falls into this so-called "crap" category & Friday The 13th takes the place of last years' Cloverfield. Well, Friday does have a bit more gratuitous nudity & sex than Cloverfield ofcourse but that's not going to save the film from being a total bomb, which it is. I hung out with an old friend for a few hours this afternoon. The last time he and I really hung out was about 20 years ago. Friday the 13th had all of your typical characters; the rich frat boy with a bad attitude, the dorky kid with a crush on the promiscuious yet unattainable hottie, the sensitive hero guy, and the "party dude." My list is not exhaustive, but you get the point. The movie wasn't all bad. It did a good job of giving background information on Jason, his mom, and the camp counselor. This is more a review for those who aren't wholly dedicated or even really familiar with the original Friday the 13th film series. I have never seen any of the original movies apart from the terrible Jason X which I come to understand has nothing really to do with the Jason mythology. This rehashing of the series for me was a perfect way to try and understand the crazed attraction to the Jason character and the infamous hockey mask.
