Do you Emily take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband...."I do" and do you Howard take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife....."I'm gay"...not a way to start a marriage I should think. Emily's response - "Was there ANY OTHER TIME you could have told me this?".
It all starts with Cameron (Matt Dillon) giving his acceptance speech at the Academy Awards and he thanks Howard (Kevin Kline), his former high school teacher and throws in the fact that Howard is gay. This is the first anyone has heard of this, including Howard! And the snowball starts at the top of the mountain and rolls on down from there.
Howard's parents (Wilford Brimley, Debbie Reynolds - probably the straightest looking people alive) show up at his door, the principal at the school (Bob Newhart) questions him "Could you just walk for me?", a TV reporter (Tom Selleck) covering the story of the gay high school teacher thanks to Cameron, his friends throwing him a bachelor party a le' Streisand - this movie is too funny for words!
Howard's attempts to reassure everyone that he is NOT gay, including himself, lead to some of the funniest scenes in a movie for a long time. His "I Will Survive" sissy-boy dance is hysterical and the way his father approaches him (with a piece of the wedding cake I might add) in his home after he comes out' at his wedding is priceless. The way they beat the bejesus outta Barbra Streisand is so funny maybe she even got a kick out of it!
Cameron shows up back in town to try to right his wrong, bringing along his girlfriend - a top model that looks according to him like a swizzle stick'. He leaves her alone in the room while he searches for Howard and she attempts to dial a phone in such a way that it is pitiful. In the meantime, Emily is out on the town - fully wedding gowned - in a bar, trying to drown her sorrows by confessing to Selleck. She tries to pick him up and he admits that he is gay. She runs from the bar and screams "IS EVERYBODY GAY??????" and runs into Cameron, her ex-student that has just a bit of crush on her.
Is Howard gay? Hell, who cares....the whole premise of the movie is so ridiculous that you don't even care. Every one in the movie does an outstanding job, the story line is superb and who cares if the ending kinda stinks. Expect laughter in this one - well worth the view!
