Pros: Newman :)

Cons: a little jerky and disjointed

Who cares what the story is about if Paul Newman is in it? As a young, cocky self-proclaimed judge, Newman rides into town and sets up shop. The first thing he does is draw a moustache on his own wanted poster so you pretty much know he doesn't have a lot of respect for the law. The townspeople take offense to his attitude, saddle him up and ship him out (not in the nicest way) and leave him in the middle of the desert.

He gets just a tad ticked about this, returns to town, kills everyone involved and renames the town Langtry, after the infamous Lily. His premise is - anyone that has the nerve to pass through HIS town will be robbed and hanged. Now this is the OLD west! Eventually the town turns on him and he is ousted again, only to return and kill off all his naysayers. The end has Langtry coming to see the town named after her, only to find Bean gone and nothing left but an endearing letter he never sent her. I'm not giving anything away here, there is plenty more action I am keeping my lip zipped on.

Good things about this movie: well, of course, Newman. It is part funny and part violent. It has a boat load of great actors that do a fantastic job.

Bad things: a lot of disjointed scenes where actors wander in for cameo appearances for no known reason and disappear just as fast. Maybe too much violence for that time era when released. Newman cannot and should not sing. Kinda gives an off color look into the old west, not that I was there, despite what you may think!

Stars: Paul Newman (Judge Roy Bean), Jacqueline Bisset (Rose Bean), Ava Gardner (Lily Langtry), Tab Hunter (Sam Dodd), John Huston (Grizzly Adams), Stacy Keach (Bad Bob), Roddy McDowall (Frank Gass), Anthony Perkins (Reverend LaSalle), Victoria Principal (Marie Elena), Ned Beatty (Tector Crites), Steve Kanaly (Whorehouse Lucky Jim)and just for fun - the who*e family - Margo Epper, Jeannie Epper, and Stephanie Epper, momma woulda been proud of her girls!
