Not long ago when I talked about "The Proposal" I said that if I could find a "rom com" that took a few more chances and had a few more surprises I could like it a little more. It turns out that I like this movie quite a great deal. Quite uncharacteristically. It's not that it's a comedy, drama or even melodrama. It turns out to be quite a realistic and touching movie. It's a movie where you don't expect any good out of it from the beginning. Sometimes life can feel a little unbalanced as you try and find just that, balance. Through the harder times that you may face people will look for ways to avoid thinking of the turmoil you may face using laughter and maybe if you’re lucky the comfort of another person if only for a little while. There's a general problem I have with Hollywood's so-called "romantic comedies". They tend to try to hard to make audiences laugh by being juvenile and predictably raunchy thus failing to be truly comedic. I might be the only serious guy around here who actually enjoyed this flick. Calling “Love and Other Drugs” a romantic comedy or a “chick flick” wouldn’t be accurate at all. I was surprised at how much I like this movie at the end of it. It's not made in heaven love story nor is it one that makes the audience feels good about themselves. Yet, it is one with lots of layering to love and one that is realistic and yet hopeful enough for viewers to go home with lots to think about! Not many movies offer such an even combination of reality, humor, hope and love!
