In this action-packed movie, Denzel Washington stars as an ex-CIA/assassin who's latest gig is bodyguard to the rich...in this case, Dakota Fanning. On the heels of a rash of kidnappings involving children of the wealthy, Denzel (John Creasy) is assigned to watch over Pita Ramos. They grow quite attached to one another, and when despite his best efforts she is kidnapped anyway and seemingly killed, Creasy reacts with all of the fury of a parent avenging their young. Most notable statement in the …

I have to admit right here that I found the movie annoying. There is much to admire, particularly a stellar cast all doing a great job. I also have a strong stomach (and love stuff like RESERVOIR DOGS, KILL BILL, etc. etc. in which the bad guys are dispatched in "creative" ways) and appreciation for well done violence.     But there were too many things that bothered me...Director Tony Scott's directing style for starters. With kidnapping a viable enterprise in Mexico City, wealthy parents are expected to purchase multi-million dollar life insurance policies, with expectations that their children can be randomly snatched and held for ransom. These kidnappings have become culturally endemic, a source of enormous profit for clever criminals who have bribed the appropriate officials to extort money from terrified parents, with no real assurance that they will see their children alive after the ordeal.    One …

Adapted from a 1980 novel by A.J. Quinnell and previously filmed as a 1987 vehicle for Scott Glenn, this re-make starts out with a random kidnapping in Mexico City of a well-off, young teen boy, flash-film storytelling of the kidnapper's dirty deed of graphically cutting off of the boy's ear that is subsequently sent to the boy's father, and a ransom drop being set up and accomplished...     Flash forward and enter Denzel Washington arriving in crime-ridden Mexico City as drunkard, …

Denzel does a great job playing a former government agent assigned to protect a little girl from kidnapping in Mexico City. When he is assigned he is ready to kill himself. He and the little girl develop a type of father/child relationship that is so strong that it gives him reason to live. When the girl is actually kidnapped, Denzel goes on a rampage against anyone that was involved, meting out vigilante justice.    Some scenes may be a little graphically violent and the actual …

MAN ON FIRE is a brilliant film for many reasons: the script by Brian Helgeland is right up there with his 'Mystic River' and 'LA Confidential', the direction by Tony Scott delivers an almost unbearable exposition of violence and evil while equally metering that aspect with some of the finest moments of acting from his cast that they have ever given, the cinematography is color saturated and creatively shot and edited in a way that propels the force of the story in a Grand Guignol manner, and last …
