Dennehy & Channing? Dennehy in love???

  • Jun 18, 2000
Pros: .....

Cons: .....

Is it possible Brian Dennehy is an a$$ in real life?

Dennehy plays the part of district attorney Falcon on the tail of suspected mob guys. Stockard Channing is his assistant, in the office and in the bed. For once Dennehy actually shows a soft side in his love interest with Channing.

I've lost the other names in this series, so we will have to go with just good guys, bad guys and good guys wife. I will tell you the parts were played by Laura Harrington, Ken Pogue and David Cumming, if that helps.

Anyway, good guy runs a bar. Just your average joe trying to support a family. In walks bad guy #1 and sees bad guy #2. Bad guy #1 shoots bad guy #2 for some infraction of bad guy rules. As bad guy #1 leaves the bar, he sees good guy huddling behind the phone booth.

Good guy goes to Dennehy and becomes - ta da - the perfect witness. He saw it all, he has names, he has descriptions, he is willing to testify. What else could a D.A. want? Does he want truth and justice or does he just want to nail the really bad guy? The really bad guy is involved with the underground.

Good guys wife is really upset with the idea. For one thing, really bad guy confronts the family and insinuates "If you hurt my son, I will have to hurt your son", said in true bad guy voice (kinda Marlon Brandoish). Dennehy and Channing scurry good guys family off to a safe house, which we all know with bad guys involved is never truly safe. Son of good guy, like all children do, leaves safe house to go visit dad at work.

Of course, bad guy, really bad guy and stand-in bad guy run into son and son ends up in the hospital in traction (this wasn't very nice since he was only about 8 years old, but then again, these are bad guys). Good guy gets really pi$$ed. Where he had at first considered forgoing his role in court, now he steps forward with both feet.

Do the bad guys pay for their dastardly deeds? Does the good guy right wrongs? Does the wife leave the good guy? Did I mention Stockard Channing gets killed in crossfire, upsetting Dennehy to no end and giving him even more cause to champion the rights of good guys everywhere? Does Dennehy stick it to the good guy once again, as Dennehy always does? Watch it and see for yourself.

The really weird thing is, I liked the darn movie. I just lost track of the names but fortunately wrote down the stars as the credits wafted by. Even though Dennehy is usually a really mean SOB in movies, I like his acting. In this one he was his normal self but he was good. Channing is really good but unfortunately leaves half way through the movie, not of her choice.

There was enough suspense to keep you interested, some mediocre killing. The script was fairly decent and the scenes were well acted. Lines flowed fairly well and there didn't seem to be a lot of inconsistencies with one scene flowing into the other. I'm not sure I like Channing as a blonde, and not a good one either, nor am I sure I liked the love connection with Dennehy. He is supposed to remain a bad guy and not have a soft side.
