A rebuttal to The Woods opinion...

Pros: Realistic look into human relationships

Cons: Didn't probe deeply enough..

Based on your review of this film it is clear to see that you have never been in a serious, committed relationship. And you have never had it fall apart around you like so much hay blown away in a storm. Human relationships are not what we see on Fox courtesy of Beverly Hills 90210, or the now thankfully dead, Melrose Place. Nor are they things of fairy tales like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, or Pretty Woman; far too often they are the Story of Us!

I think the movie was an all too real portrayal of a long-term relationship on the brink of self-destruction. The yelling, the screaming, the prolonged silences, and the feeling of helplessness are all sadly characteristics of a relationship where the love is there but cannot be felt long enough for all the pain inflicted on each other. Keeping a loving, sharing, caring committed relationship together is a tremendous task and responsibility and most often—as the marriage failure rate in the United States will bear out—people fail to keep it together!

The emotional turmoil and stress you feel going through a breakup are enormous and the pressure to keep it all together can drain you and leave you feeling lost, alone, and extremely depressed. The crying spell Bruce Willis experienced was all too real for me; I have been where he was, and was lucky to have survived it with my sanity intact. I pray that you never have to experience anything like the Story of Us.

And at the end, what she was saying is that she knew her husband and he knew her, every inch of her, backwards and forwards, sideways and back. They knew each other’s hearts, minds and souls, and getting to know another human being that well takes time and commitment, and is no easy task. She was saying that she didn’t want to have to do it again, that she loved her husband, and accepted his flaws, and was ready to love him for who he was.

I was just reading @woopak_the_thrill's review of Blue Valentine and he had asked me if I had seen this movie which I haven't. It seems to be the same kind of story of a relationship unraveling. I'm going to have to see both before I can do a compare and contrast! Thanks for sharing so I have an idea as to what to expect :)
