Well it is with a great deal of advanced research that I went into Sunshine and even still didn’t feel fully prepared for the material within. I suppose a part of this had to do with director Danny Boyle’s (past credits include 28 Days Later & The Beach) unique approach of blending hard science fiction with horror. Sunshine is the latest sci-fi movie based on a doomsday scenario. Except here, the doomsday is actually a state of minimal sunshine, and hence eternal winter on Earth. A crew of international astronauts are sent to the Sun to ignite it with the Earth's last reserve of fissible material. Along the way they make bad decisions that force them into making worse decisions. The end result is that they all die, though after re-igniting the Sun. The movie is actually more of a drama … more

Pros: Visually stunning, a special effects masterpiece. Cons: Lack of character development. The Bottom Line: For the most part I found Sunshine entertaining. Brilliantly directed by Danny Boyle, SUNSHINE is a visually stunning science fiction suspense film. In the future, the Sun has been infected with a "Q Ball" and is not working the way it should. A ship, named Icarus I, with a bomb as dense as Manhattan, is sent to the sun and blow up the "Q Ball". The ship never arrives and almost two decades later another ship, Icarus II, is sent to complete the job. `Sunshine' fills me with ambivalence. Even though more of a fantasy than science fiction, the film is launched with originality: A group of young astronauts are sent close to the sun fifty years from now to reenergize its fading zenith. The plot is as basic as it gets. The movie is episodic, filled with disasters and treachery with only a little time to pause and reflect. Bright Spots: 1.)
