I have to say first, I'm not a comic book fan. I've never read, nor will I ever read any sort of comic book. I am, however, a movie fan. I loved the first two Chris Reeve Superman Movies, (3 and 4 were just dreadful) and I was hoping that with this reincarnation it would bring back the awesomeness of the first two. The initial reviews in the theaters were that Superman Returns breathed new life into a stale franchise, however I fail to see that. After astronomers find traces of his home planet Kryption, Superman vanishes from Earth for five years; only to return to find that... gee whiz... things have changed. So he's explicitly called Saviour several times. He floats serenely in the clouds, hearing everything at once, yet able to distinguish cries for help and respond. He sees all. He says that he is everywhere. He has a son by a woman we all assumed to be a virgin until her hook-up with a nice guy who ought to be named Joe, who raises the boy... SUPERMAN RETURNS is actually closer to the original intention of comic books for kids than most of the other incarnations. Kids bought comic books for the color, the action, the hero who represents the guy who can set a ditzy world straight, and a bunch of feel good sidebars that pay homage to mothers, other kids, bad guys defeated, and the open end for yet another installment.
