This Girl's Life - 2003

Rating:

Pros: probably the interviews on the extras

Cons: an all around poorly made & acted movie

The Bottom Line:
"Unlike all the other ladies, she looked so young and sweet
As she made her way alone down that empty street
Down on mainstreet"
~Bob Seger

When I started watching This Girl's Life I was immediately turned off.  Not a big fan of those movies where the participants stare at the camera and talk to you like you are sitting with them.  Decided to give it a chance and follow it through.   It was written and directed by Ash Baron-Cohen and won one award.   Rating is R for graphic dialogue, strong sexuality, nudity, violence, drug use, and language.

The story:
Moon is a porn star, plain and simple.  She is not particularly in love with her job but she does love sex, she;s just tired.   To further complicate matters, she lives with her father who has Parkinson's Disease and she meets a man not in the industry.

One of her best friends is engaged but doesn't totally trust her boyfriend so she asks Moon to go undercover and see if he will stray.   Moon starts a part time company called SIA, or Sexual Intelligence Agency, where she becomes  a private eye trying to see if a partner is likely to stray.

Everything seems to be hitting her all at once: her father going more out of control,  her personal relationship both speeds up and slows down, her SIA causes her problems, and her porn job is weighing her down.

The actors:
This was the first actual film for Juliette Marquis, having only done two stints on TV prior to this.    I've not seen her in anything else so I have only this performance to judge her by - she blew chunks, pardon the pun considering her profession.   Although a beautiful woman, she simply fell flat in this role giving it no life or personality.

More surprising was James Woods, the father, who gave an awful portrayal of Parkinson's Disease.  Personally I don't know anyone that has the disease and can only relate from what I've seen from Michael J. Fox and Janet Reno.   Woods looked more like someone with Cerebral Palsy.  I don't mean to sound cold or uncaring but he just didn't seem to carry the proper persona.

Also appearing in the film was Kip Pardue who played Moon's new love interest, Kip.   Apparently he has problems remembering names and has to go by his own.    Rosario Dawson played the girlfriend with the straying boyfriend that got Moon into SIA.

DVD extras:
Probably the best part of the film, it carried two rather in depth interviews with Marquis and Dawson.  It also had a small feature with information about Parkinson's, trailer, and previews.

Overall impression:
I simply wasn't impressed.   The acting was mediocre and about all they gave you in regard to the porn industry is that it is a business just like any other looking for a profit.    I can't believe I'm saying this but you got more from Boogie Nights than you did in this film.

The quality of the film itself is rather awful.   It comes as a full-frame but they didn't use cameras that were correct for that.  In several shots the faces are so out of context and separated from each other that it distorts the scene.   A lot of the film appears grainy, especially in darkened scenes, giving it almost an amateur appearance.  The audio wasn't anything to brag about either.   It is rather flat and lifeless.

Overall I was disappointed with the film both in quality and delivery.   The acting was unimpressive and the script dismal.

thanks,
Susi
