Proud Mary keeps on rolling.....

Pros: .music, music, music

Cons: .....

A pounding, heartbreaking look into the destructive lives of Ike and Tina Turner. Did we want to know this much background about one of the true divas of rock today? Why not if it shows us that will and determination can pull you up and get you out!

This movie was based on the autobiography I, Tina and stars Angela Bassett as Tina and Laurence Fishburne as Ike. It basically takes you through the life and very hard times of Tina, starting with her singing debut at age 8 in the church choir and progressing through to the end of her career with Ike and her ultimate success on her own.

Being around during the beginning with Tina (ancient ogre that I am) and watching her progress to the star she is today, I was aware of all the controversy surrounding her very public life with Ike Turner. What this movie shows however, is some of the background you didn't get in the headlines, not that they missed many potshots at this duo. I admire Ms. Turner for throwing her laundry out for all of us to see, good and bad.

Of course, it was always generally assumed Ike was a basic bad guy throughout their career and this movie does little to change your mind about that. One thing he did do though was promote Tina in a huge way. He believed in her if nothing else, even at the cost of her health and mental well being.

With this movie, you watch the progression of the artist through the changing music styles that have rocked us for generations. As proof of her talent, Tina was able to adapt to these changes and move with the times. And rocks on to this day! Her shows are exhausting, how does she move like that?????

Stars and star power
Angela Bassett plays Tina better than Tina herself. She adopts her mannerisms, her style and her feeling. What she didn't adopt was her singing voice, Turner did all the singing herself in this flick. Laurence Fishburne as Ike Turner is powerful and he, by the way, does do his own singing. They both deserved, and should have won, their Academy nominations for their parts in this movie. Rae'ven Kelly as the young Ms. Turner was just cute as a button and rocked right through her part.

The true star of the movie though was the music and will always be the music.
