Sex and Betrayals

It spans the life of a king, Hengry VIII. The king of England, Ireland and France in the 16th century. A king with 6 wives! One who executed his wives, 2 of them to be precise and had so many mistresses that men of this age would be envious to their core! As for ladies of that time, oh my, how unfortunate they all were! Am I glad that I wasn’t born during those days!
So, it’s a 4 seasons TV series that told of love, sex (lots, I’ve never seen another series that has more of it! I’m assuming it’s R-rated in the States), betrayals, executions and persecutions. For someone who has no clue about historical events, it’s an interesting show. For those who love England, it is captivating. For those who like historical romances and dramas, this one has quite a bit of it going for the audience.

I can’t say I like the events as they unfold but it did keep me glued (amidst multi-tasking) for hours to see how things would eventually end for a king who thought he could do no wrong but his wives had to be faithful (else, they’d end up dead or annulled). I was actually quite indignant at how powerful kings were then. Other commoners were sometimes not even treated as humans! Well, king was also human so he’d suffer pains as well. And, eventually death. His 3 heirs, 2 princesses and a prince did not leave any heirs thereafter. Mary, known as Bloody Mary didn’t reigned for long after the death of Prince Edward. The one who ended up ruling England for 44 years was Elizabeth I who is commonly known as the Virgin Queen. She was indeed the daughter of Henry VIII and his “executed” Queen Anne Boleyn.
One thing that left me a lasting impression is how a king’s favor could change so swiftly and brutally. Whether that is the truth or not is anyone’s guess. However, it’s in tune with his affection for his children too. So, that doesn’t make Henry VIII comes across a very likeable person.  He had no real friends and more people feared him than loved him; anyone who stood in his way would be charged with treason. Being royalty certainly didn’t bring happiness to many people. Having said that, if one thinks life is hard now, after watching this show, you’d be glad you were not living in those age and time! Thank God!!! :-)

It was another American who recommended it. I watched it on DVD just last week. I'm not really into history so it was kinda fun to watch how corrupted people are back then, LOL... Or may be these days too, I wouldn't have know ;-)
