It's a damn shame

Movie stars don't get any bigger than Tom Cruise - limitless money and international fame.  He is an Oscar worthy actor, and deserved one for Fourth of July (just bad luck/timing that he had to battle Daniel Day Lewis / My Left Foot).  There's no way that kind of money/fame and power won't have a dramatic effect on your general psyche.  That said, many superstars of his caliber have managed to grow and age very gracefully (see Paul Newman and Robert Redford).  It's a heart breaker that someone as cool as Tom Cruise (circa Risky Business, Top Gun, A Few Good Men and Cocktail) has become so detached from reality.  I respect his passion, and everyone is entitled to their own belief system, but I have to believe Scientology is at the root of his fall from grace.  Life is a journey and an evolution, and MAYBE his journey will return him to a state of cool.

I worked at the Post Office for 25 years and had many chances to look at the in-house Scientology publications. Now I couldn't sit around reading articles or anything because I was working, but when a machine would break down I could read short items and letters to the editor and such. What I read was enough to convince me that there are definitely some nutcases invovled with Scientology.  Of course you could say that of any religion. However one example is worth citing although it was some time ago and I can't recreate it exactly.  A Scientologist wrote in and told how she had been in a local mall one day and spotted a pregnant woman.  She instantly knew that the woman was pregnant with a Thetan and that the baby was in distress, so she contacted the baby telepathically and told him not to be concerned because he would be born soon. The Thetan baby calmed down and all was well. Many of the letters I read over the years contained material of this nature.  Feel free to draw your own conclusions if you like from this one unsubstansiated example.

Tom Cruise is an intense guy (to say the least) who has a passion for acting, and he's very good at it. Who knows what he was like prior to celebrity? We didn't know him then, but one thing I do know is that money changes everything. Also, he does have handlers who tell him what to do, and often the star is ill-advised, as I believe is the case with Tom Cruise. At the time of his couch jumping incident on Oprah, his sister was his publicist. I believe she was promptly fired after that. Family members who aren't trained often get involved in the actor's affairs when they really stay out of it.

Is it the Scientology or just being a mega super star that has him one step removed from reality? Seriously, being "Tom Cruise" has to be very difficult, you can't go out in public, you are chased by paps, you are catered to hand and foot and NO one will argue with you ( ok except Matt Lauer) . I think being a super famous superstar might impact your hold on the 'real' world.

Outstanding, highly underrated actor. In my personal pantheon of movie stars - not necessarily actors, but STARS - Cruise ranks second only to Paul Newman.

It's hard to deny that Tom Cruise is a pretty talented actor.  He is.  But unfortunately when you become a big star--especially as big as Tom Cruise is--you start to lose a private life.  And your actions become more important to people than the work itself.  Sure, we can berate Tom Cruise for his stunt on Oprah, his fascination with Scientology that goes a little beyond crazy at times... but deep down you still have to remember that this guy did do such classic films as Risky …

It's amazing how people overlook someone's career and the whole reason they're in the public eye in the first place when that person does something they don't agree with.  Tom Cruise is one of the best actors of this generation and that deserves acknowledgement.  Yeah, maybe people don't agree with his beliefs and maybe he has made some poor choices of how to behave in public (chuckle), but he still is very good at what he does and I think its a shame that his ability to have successful …

Tom Cruise
I used to like Tom Cruise.  But now I don't.  As soon as he joined Scientology he became a crazy crazy guy!  He jumps on coaches, professes his love to everyone and in general is off his rocker.  But hey, can you blame a guy that has all the money in the world, marries my future wife and thinks that chemical imbalances really don't exist!   Now I could tell you my all the weird things about him, but there are sites dedicated to it. One such site is …
