From the minute Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin opened their mouths, I could tell I was going to miss last year's host, Hugh Jackman. The things that came out of the two hosts mouths were not very good and a little to tongue and cheek. It wasn't organic at all and both comedians both sounded like they wanted to be doing something else. Before the two even hit the stage Neil Patrick Harris opened the show with a musical number and I couldn't help but wonder, why wasn't he hosting the Oscars? Besides mediocre hosting, the 82nd Academy Awards ended up being a night of shocks...and snubs, dominated by Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker while James Cameron's epic Avatar was hung out to dry. While it may be a little difficult to feel bad that The Hurt Locker won due to being such a powerful film, you have to wonder if the sci-fi Oscar curse is what made Avatar come up short?

There were definitely some highlights at this years Academy Awards. Christoph Waltz who played Colonel Hans Landa of the Nazi SS in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. This was one of the more predictable wins, but Mr. Waltz was most deserving of the Award. Best Supporting Actress went to Mo'Nique who, though I haven't seen Precious, seemed like she gave one hell of an outstanding performance and everyone seemed to agree when she went up to the podium to take home the Oscar. Though it seemed like the Oscar for Best Actor was a race between George Clooney (Up in the Air) and Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker; my choice), the award went to Jeff Bridges for his performance in Crazy Heart, picking up his first Oscar. It seemed that the happiest moment of the night (it was really nice to see) was when Sandra Bullock won her first Academy Award for Actress in a Leading Role. It seemed like she was always overlooked over the years, but her performance in The Blind Side finally got her the recognition and the Oscar. While this may not be the biggest Oscar of the night, Star Trek FINALLY took home its first Oscar for Makeup!
What seemed like a great night for most, turned out to be a bad night for Avatar. While the film along with The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds seemed to be in the top three films to win, Avatar seemed to be the favorite for Best Picture. It didn't get it. It wasn't just Best Picture that Avatar didn't win the Oscar for; James Cameron was overlooked for Best Director, which I believe is more hanus than not winning Best Picture. Cameron revolutionized film making with Avatar, spending 13 years to get the film off the ground. I could have lived with Avatar not getting Best Picture if Cameron had gotten the Directing nod, but the fact that he didn't was simply astonishing. While The Hurt Locker took home six Oscars in total, Avatar went away with only three...A shame.
I can't really take anything away from The Hurt Locker though. Kathryn Bigelow did such a fantastic job making such a truthful war film that it deserved almost every Oscar it won...including Best Picture. I even feel like it should have won one more for Best Actor, but it wasn't to be. The real disappointment from this years Oscar's came from the terrible hosting from Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. From Baldwin's weird accents to Steve Martin's almost dirty old man theme, I would have been happier watching Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner host the show. There definitely were some funny moments, but they certainly didn't come from the hosts. I'm sure after their performance, the Academy had Hugh Jackman on the phone shortly after. As for Avatar... the sequel will just have to win the Best Picture Oscar in three years. Till next year, happy movie going! 2/5!

OK, I can’t really “review” the Oscar’s b/c I don’t watch that stuff. It is long, boring and I really don’t care what people are wearing or what political comments they have to spew. That being said, I do have thoughts. The first award of the night went to a Christopher Waltz. I usually do my best to avoid these self-congratulating spectacles for people that really don't provide any real value to our nation other than employing a small portion of the population. I happened to be sitting talking with my family and they had the show on. I could not avoid watching this show. I found that this show did not have the flair and pomp of the normal shows but dealt more along the human interest stories of those that were in the running. … more

I'm actually someone who enjoys watching the Academy Awards. Although for very different reasons. The 82nd Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, honored the best films of 2009 and took place March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California beginning at 5:30 p.m. PST/8:30 p.m. EST (01:30 UTC, March 8). The ceremony was scheduled from its usual late February date to avoid coinciding with the 2010 Winter Olympics. The Academy Awards ceremony was televised in the United States on ABC. Actors Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin hosted the show. Martin hosted for the third time, after previously presiding over the 73rd and 75th ceremonies, while Baldwin hosted the show for the first time. This was the first telecast to have multiple hosts since the 59th ceremony. However, announcer Gina Tuttle did a majority of the presenter introductions. In fact, this was the seventh year in a row the announcer introduced the Best Picture presenter (which turned out to be Tom Hanks).
On February 20, 2010, in a ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, the Academy Awards for Technical Achievement were presented by host Elizabeth Banks.

SciFi might be "cursed", but comedy is outright ignored. That's always bothered me about the Oscars. It's so overt that I think they should just create a comedy award since nothing that is intended to make people laugh is ever going to win. I submit that it will next to impossible to even get nominated.
