Despite the fact that “The Last Exorcism” had some flaws, I thought it was a pretty enjoyable film to watch. Yes, it did not give solid answers, but the way it played on the unknown, the mild social commentary and the performance by Ashley Bell made it work.

This sequel dispenses of the ‘found-footage’ cinematography and is shot in the conventional way. It puts its focus not on a exorcism, but rather makes New Orleans culture, a messy exploration of one’s return to darkness and a mixed expression on the views of faith. There really isn’t enough intricacies in this film to support this sequel, as its workings are pretty pedestrian. As a result, it struggles to generate suspense, and the creep factor are few and far in-between (admittedly there is one creepy scene). I am not particularly fond of the way the screenplay developed its premise, and the confrontation between Abalam and New Orleans voodoo-like practitioners just did not work.

Too bad, Bell is such a good actress that I think her talent was wasted on this ho-hum sequel. She deserved a better film. [2 Out of 5 Stars]

I believe that a movie on exorcisms should have that exclusive focus with the surrounding environment secondary to the overall theme.
