VHS

Man I remember VHS tapes like it was only yesterday that they were the big thing. There was nothing better than going to the video store to rent all kinds of movies and wrestling tapes. Also if you had a video camera you filmed onto VHS tapes. That is what we have here with the film "VHS" which is about some tapes being watched. So when I first read about this in "Fangoria" I was all excited about it. The found footage thing may be getting old to some but the best thing about this was going to be old. I mean of course the look of the film, old VHS film that is.

The film follows a group of friends who terrorize women and engage in all kinds of criminal mischief. They get the opportunity to rob a house and get paid to steal a VHS tape. While there they come across a room with a dead man in it. The room is full of VHS tapes and they go through them one by one.

The first tape is called "Amateur Night" and sees three friends going out to a bar trying to pick up women to bring back to their hotel room. Little do these women know that one of them has glasses with a camera hidden inside it. All is going well as they get two girls to go back with them but as one of them passes out the other seems to be into what is going on. That is until she decides that it is going nowhere at least for two of them. Now I won't go into what happens or how this is a horror story but I will say it may be my favorite in the anthology. The twist that takes place here is excellent and it does not hurt that I like the women that is the main focus here. The acting on her part was excellent and the film feels real, especially for this type of flick.

The next episode in this little anthology is called "Second Honeymoon" and is about a couple on just that. All is going well until a woman asks if she can get a ride from them the next day. They are a little freaked out by her and decide they will leave without her early the next morning. But someone is interested in this young couple. This one is another good one that feels real as well but it really made me mad once it was all over. The thing is that may not be a bad thing because I was thinking of this like it actually happened.

"Tuesday the 17th" is a weird one that sees a group of friends going out to some woods where one of them was attacked a year earlier. All of her friends were killed and the killer remains at large. Going back may help her but it may also be round two of a killer's game. Out of all of them this may be my least favorite. I don't know what it was but I just couldn't get into this one. I liked the way they did the killer and the story was good enough but it wasn't for me.

Next up we get "The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger", yes I know that is a long title. This one is all about a girl named [you guessed it] Emily who video chats with her boyfriend James every night. She is worried about a bump in her arm and is also plagued by what seems to be ghosts in her house. James assures her everything is ok but the sounds and images won't stop forcing her to take it into her own hands to solve the problems she is having. Now this is a good one that has a cool ending and a good performance from the girl playing Emily. The best thing about this one is the twist that some may seem coming but it is still a good one.

The final story is simply called "10/31/98" and may be the absolute best of the bunch. This one is right up there with first one in my opinion. The film follows four friends that are out looking for a party, they of course go to the wrong house. Once arriving everything seems a little odd and the house may be haunted. Of course that may be because of what is going on upstairs. This one has a great story to it and is performed wonderfully by all involved. Also the best thing about this one is the ending, which I loved.

This over all was a good little anthology film that honestly was better than I thought it would be. I knew it would be good based on what I read but I did not know there were two segments I would really love here. All of the writers and directors did well here. There may have been some actors that were a little off but over all everything was done well. I guess I am on to the sequel.

*** out of ****    Found footage has become one of the most annoying gimmicks in recent memory. For many filmmakers; it's cheap - and in more ways than one - and convenient for starting a career. It astounds me that people still eat this shit up. There have been countless films made within this horror sub-genre over recent years yet hardly any of them will truly be remembered, because hardly any of them are actually innovative and were made by people who actually had an understanding …

Star Rating:         Of the ten credited directors of V/H/S, a combination of a found footage mockumentary and an anthology horror film, nine of them have prior filmmaking experience with either feature length movies, shorts, television episodes, or some combination thereof. On the basis of the final product, you’d swear they’ve only just learned what a camcorder is; in their efforts to make each segment look like an authentic amateur home movie, they rely …
