Talk about depravity and obsession! Mickey Rourke is the quissesential slave owner here, Kim Bassinger the perfect victim.
Bassinger works in a classy New York art gallery, Rourke is a customer. Rich, powerful, just a little bit naughty. Bassinger obviously is a needy and easily swayed lady, looking for a little something to spice up her life. She finds it in Rourke.
He is proud of his ability to enslave Bassinger. Making her do things she never dreamed of before. A lot of playful interaction with food and frankly, I will never be able to look at a strawberry the same way again. You wonder for a while if indeed he really does care for her, but his actions lead you to believe he isn't anything other than what he appears to be - overbearing and demanding.
His power of suggestion, or rather, her ability to receive these suggestions, is the primary basis of the movie. In particular, when he gives her a watch and tells her she will think of him every day at noon - it works (um, I won't go into details here since it may offend some people).
When released, this was considered highly controversial, durn near pornographic in a soft porn way, but today - Hell, just another piece of over done fluff. That is, if you consider domination and degradation, fluff. Just one more reason for guys to think they actually have the power to control us and one more reason for us to think we should be controlled.
When it came out, I liked the movie. Now an older and wiser woman, I am offended by the idea of it. But in the meantime I've seen worse and managed to get on with my life anyway. Watch it with an open eye, I wonder in the end who actually controlled who?
My introduction to both Rourke and Bassinger. I liked them both in their parts in this movie but never really saw anything afterwards that I cared for in Rourke. Bassinger has made a few good flicks since then - really liked her in Batman with Keaton - and I understand her newest - something to do with Africa is really great.
Oh - I forgot - the reason for the name of the movie, the "romance" only lasted 9-1/2 weeks, but honey, they were strong ones!
