I don't generally rent movies for their cover art, because it usually dosn't turn out as well for me as when i buy books for the cover. But since my weekends of late have been long, and for lack of a better word, lonely, here i am watching Beastly. Let me just forewarn readers now this review is riddled with spoilers. The story goes as follows, Kyle, our typical popular highschool kid; rich, attractive blah blah is running for president for "president of the green committe" wich i'm assuming is something similar to student counsel when he manages to offend the schools "witch" who curses him with eternal ugliness unless he can get a girl to love him in that form the change will become perminant. I would like to point out this is far from an origional plot line its almost exactly the same as the synoposis of Disney's animated Beauty and the Beast actually. In the first scene of this movie young Kyle almost had me reaching for the remote with his speech about how "people like people who look good" and how anyone who dosen't fall under his defination of attractiveness "just missed the beauty boat." It was cold and stuck me on a very personal level, being one of those people who falls short of conventional attractivness. So Kyle and all of his narcissim gets transformed into a shade of his former self who is scared to the point of being misshapen, covered in rather intricate tattoo work, and metal implants along his face. I would like to point out that Kyle got the better end of the ugly deal in comparison to Disney's Beast. Not suprisingly at all Kyles father is appaled at his now ugly son, not that he paid him much mind to begin with. But now Kyles dad decides to lock him away in a more secluded house with a maid and a blind tutor for company, and essentially forget he ever had a son. After five months of wallowing the loss of his beauty Kyle decides to crash a Halloween party where not only does he discover his girlfriend and best friend are now togeather, but that all of his so called friends pretty much forgot about him when he left. I guess he just wasn't as important as he thought he was right? One good thing that comes from the party though is Kyle rediscovers Lindy, a girl who he had gone to school with and pretty much ignored because she wasn't in his "group." Kyle's new favorite pasttime is to follow Lindy around without her knowing it...a little creepy and stalkerish right? But anyway this kind of works out to Lindy's favor when Kyle pulls some crazy superhero-ish manuvers to save her from a gunman. Now this is where the story takes an even odder turn...the masked gunman that threatened Lindy is killed by her drug addict father and Kyle witnesses the entire event. And in a total weak spot in the plot Kyle blackmails Lindy's father into bringing her to live in his house with him so Kyle can "protect her".....pleeeeeease! The previously slow moving story speeds up once Lindy moves in with Kyle. He tries everything to get her affection to no end until he starts to use his head not his credit cards wich leads to a very sappy scene in the greenhouse wich i will not elaborate on because it made me want to vomit. But all of Kyle's efforts are for nothing because Lindy only thinks of him as a good friend, even though at this point i felt that Kyle was really starting to learn his lesson and did truely love Lindy. The end of the movie comes at you very fast and rushed. It seems that Kyle will remain in his scared state forever until the whole movie comes to a close in a last minute but still very hollywood "i love you scene" in the school hallway.....barf! This movie was not nearly as bad as it could have been the plot runs pretty smoothly for most of the film and it is definatly better than some of the other Twilighty knockoff teen romance films out there. Would i watch it again...hmmm probably not, but i would recommend it to others for a one time viewing because its entertaining enough for just that.

Every now and then I allow myself to be dragged into seeing a movie that I normally wouldn’t even see unless it was on video. Well, since I haven’t seen any reviews for “Beastly” in Movie Hype (during the time of this review), I allowed myself to get dragged into the theaters to see this film. There is something fun about film adaptations to pieces of literature. Granted there are some books that should NEVER be messed with, but there are others that have potential of being something... well... interesting. Beastly is a fun book for what it is, and I feel that Young Adult lit is kind of one of those "touchy" areas because kids and teens read at different levels and have such a wide variety of interests that it quickly becomes one of those "agree to disagree" … more

Beastly should be considered a romantic flick by the tweener set but fails as a modern-day take on the classic Beauty and the Beast tale. Star Rating: Beastly, based on the novel by Alex Flinn, is Beauty and the Beast for the Twilight generation. I grant you that this is not automatically a bad idea, and admittedly, aspects of the film are charming – in their own naïve, adolescent ways.
