I just caught Blow on TV for the first time recently. For the most part it was a pretty good movie. It had an old school Scorsese-esque feel to it, especially with the narration and casting of Ray Liotta, it wasn't quite as foul-mouthed as something like Casino or Goodfellas but it did a good job about telling the tale of the rise of the cocaine cartels in the 70s/80s. After browsing the imdb boards as to it's accuracy regarding it's "based on true events" claim and it supposedly did a decent job and I am now interested in picking up the book the movie was based on soon.
Johnny Depp is a great actor when he's not in Tim Burton movies and this was no exception. Great Boston accent too. Ethan Suplee was a great supporting guy as usually and Ray Liotta was a nice touch as the dad. It reminded me alot of the scenes from the 80s in Goodfellas. I told my wife that during that time in the real world Ray Liotta's character was probably snorting and dealing cocaine brought into the country by Johnny Depp's character and partners in Blow. I'm not a huge Penelope Cruz fan, but she can be very sexy and in this movie she was not... maybe it's because i don't dig the rail-thin coke head look though. And a final note, Paul Rubens was great as Johnny Depp's contact/friend. I grew up with Pee-Wee and always dig it when I see him pop up in quirky roles like in this movie and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
One thing that bugged me though is the tone of the last half hour or so. I'll try to explain without spoilers even though the movie is almost ten years old, but it really seemed like they were trying to invoke sympathy for him due to his relationship with his daughter but to me, he's the one who not only dealt coke and really kicked off the industry in the US, but was caught several times and would get back into it almost immediately after being released each time. So uh... so too bad your daughter was raised to hate you by your coke addict wife who obviously was only married to you for the power and money.
Worth the watch though if you like this kind of movie, which I do.
Pros: Easier to watch than Traffic. Penelope Cruz is hot! Cons: You mean convicts? There are a few of those The Bottom Line: Winners don't do drugs (that old video game message of the late 80's) Blow, crack, coke, angel dust, it's a free country, so you're free to call cocaine whatever you like. Same with marijuana and its numerous monikers. Just don't get caught using either of these substances or, in this great, free country … more
Pros: Johnny Depp with long hair!! Great filming Cons: Too long - hard working guy who can't get ahead The Bottom Line: Good effort by Depp and director, bit off more than they could chew. Great costumes, hair and period feel of the film. Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot. There are great moments in this film, primarily of Johnny Depp looking totally cool in 70's era clothes and glasses. … more
