A weak do over of Dickens A Christmas Story and perhaps It's a Wonderful Life. Sandler portrays an unsympathetic macho dufus, self absorbed and crude workaholic. Watching how he abuses his wife, chilren and parents with benign neglect and then ponders his next career moves is simply not funny. He is given a universal remote which he uses to manipulate his life and family.
The previews and advertising imply this is a child friendly movie but it anything but. Precocious children talking about smoking crack, having sex, and utter profanities is not child's fare. The adult humor is crude as well with a strong steak of sexism and homophobia. Scene after scene of scantily clad women are ogled over by the male characters. Several scenes including Sandler making derogatory remarks about gays. Overall, this movie felt mean spirited.
The farting jokes are low grade as well as the sexuality of the family dog. Sandler has not aged well, he is slovenly, unshaven and generally out of shape.
The plot starts out well enough with the what you could do with a universal remote and then veers wildly off course when the novelty wears off. It is as if the writers are making up the plot as they go along. There is no continuity, and no sense to this mess.
The comedy stops being "funny" when the main character realizes that "family must come first" and then the plot turns into a morality tail. What?!
The writing of this turkey is just terrible and the supporting characters are completely wasted, the long suffering wife (Kate Beckinsale, the mad scientist (Christopher Walken) the oblivious parents (Julie Kavner and Henry Winkler) are left with nothing to work with.
The setting is supposed to be New York City but the sets are terrible and it is so obvious (weather conditions, scenery)that it was filmed in and around Los Angeles. The location crew was lazy in their attempts and this did not resemble NYC in the least.
The special effects crew also left a lot to be desired. The special effects consisted of blue lighting and using the fast forward and rewind effects. As the major plot of this film, the special effects were supposed to be good....right? This was embarrassing to watch.
What a waste of money and time. This movie left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Not recommend for any children under 16.
