I haven't seen this in roughly 9 years, but while this wasn't terrible, this can be best described as "Wicked City Lite." In other words, imagine Wicked City with less violence and much, much less sexual overtones and starring a protagonist more identifiable with teenage males.

I say skip this and get your paws on Wicked City, BioHunter, Doomed Megalopolis, and Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne instead.

The original novel was written by Hideyuki Kikuchi, the author of the VAMPIRE HUNTER D series. I've never read it, but apparently it features a lot more going on than in the movie. Likewise, I'm guessing this cinematic adaptation was also a victim of compression too just like AKIRA and DOOMED MEGALOPOLIS.

Thanks. I never would have guessed that the same author for Demon City Shinjuku also wrote the Vampire Hunter D books.

You're welcome. I understand what you mean by your review too. I watched this several years ago and I remembered it was decent, but at the same time, kind of "meh". I really didn't like the lightning quick ending.

As a teenager, this was among my favorite anime of its genre. Stylistically and thematically, it's typical of Kawajiri's late-'80s output, though tamer for a more lucrative mainstream niche of the OVA market. Everyone remembers Wicked City, Wind Ninja Jubei and Bloodlust when recounting Kawajiri's oeuvre, but some of his less popular projects - Cyber City Oedo, his Neo Tokyo segment and Birdy the Mighty adaptation - are relatively obscure and worth seeing besides. While hardly aspiring to its hype, X is an interesting anime, too.

If only to trigger some nostalgia, I should view this again soon...

I LOVE Neo-Tokyo, and I enjoy Cyber City Oedo. I had no idea that Kawajiri made Birdy the Mighty.

Kawajiri's a more versatile director than his reputation implies. Several years ago, I was surprised to note that he directed the Lensman anime feature, Secret of the Lens, which is a very fun picture. If you think his trademarks were scarcely nascent in '84, do yourself a favor and watch it again!
