I really put off watching In Bruges for too long. I remember renting it on several occasions, thinking it would be great, but returning it to the video store unwatched. I don't know if it was the draw of other action films, high priced special effects with low quality acting or just my moderately excited reaction to the story line from the box. All I know is that not watching this film earlier was one of the biggest mistakes of this young film goer's life! Ow to be caught up in the hype of a film when it is fresh in the minds of patrons and critics alike; the experience is invigorating. Had I only of known that this would turn out to be the one movie that I buy instantly and take to every party or Friday night movie night with my friends, I would have changed my tune. In Bruges is a film about two hitmen, Ken and Ray (played masterful by Brendan Gleason and Colin Farrell), that are sent to Belgium after botching a job sent to them by their boss (Ralph Fiennes). What sets this film apart from all of the other hitman movies that you might have seen is the dialog and it's masterful delivery by the main actors. The back and forth bickering between Ray and Ken is nothing short of hilarious and leads to one of the most quotable films in my repertoire. Even when the film takes a turn for the serious, Ferrell never seems to lose his character's wit and charm. Whether you are dealing with Ken's obsession with seeing the landmarks, "No you don't hafta see it, it's only Jesus' f***ing blood!". Or Ray's idea of fun in Bruges, "They're filmin' midgets! This is the most interesting part of Bruges yet". You never cease to be excited for what comes next.
I think the main reason why this film was not as well known as others is because of the fact that it was never released to a wide enough audience. I would consider this to be more of an indie than a mainstream film, but still. How on earth it didn't just grow legs and sweep awards I have no idea. It was exactly what people look for in a dark comedy and had enough dramatic clout to win over almost every critic that saw it. i truly believe that this movie will live on in the DVD collections though. There are thousands of people out there that are just like me, that will bring this film with them everywhere they go. It never fails to please and the characters will live on.
For my money, you couldn't own a better movie. I would encourage everyone to rent or buy this film immediately if you haven't already seen it. In Bruges will make you laugh, it will stir emotion through it's drama and it will almost assuredly keep you on the edge of your seat. No matter how many times I see this film, I always laugh even harder than the first time, and catch something that I hadn't seen before.
I'll see you in "the alcoves"!
