After revealing to the public he is Iron Man. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) has turned Iron Man into a showman. This causes him problems as a man from the shadows begins to plot against him, and the US Government seeks to take his armor away from him. -summary

The first Iron Man movie was an instant hit with me and surprisingly over time it managed to get better. There were plenty of reasons for this too, with serious character development and the supporting characters playing a role. Unfortunately, this second movie in the franchise hasn't gotten better, admittedly it hasn't exactly gotten worse either, but it's definitely something I don't believe I'll be watching again. Once again directed by Jon Favreau, Iron Man 2 which was released in 2010, doesn't manage to live up to the same standard as the first movie. It's still a fun ride for the most part, however, I was never really gripped to the plot.

Iron Man 2 is a mixed bag for me. The movie features several sub plots that all come together by the end. It follows Stark as he battles against the government for control over his property. To complicate things even further for him, he learns that the device that is keeping him alive is also killing him, he has a rival manufacturer in the form of Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), and there's a man by the name of Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) who creates his own suit and attacks him in public.

Favreau's direction with this movie was hit and miss for me. The plot really didn't seem cluttered, in fact, it was well done and the pacing was outstanding juggling these story elements. At no time did I feel that the movie was hard to follow, and there was a good enough focus on each of these elements to keep even the worse ADD-ridden individual up to date. He even managed to squeeze in some action here and there as well.

The problem I have with this movie is parts of the plot actually. I didn't care for the character interactions this time; the trade offs between Stark and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) overstayed their welcome too quick for me. The side characters really weren't as strong this time around and I really didn't like how they were used. Justin Hammer was a shadow of himself from the comic, and I just couldn't take him serious as an antagonist due to him being portrayed as a bumbling idiot. Hammer is a very cruel individual who could have easily been that prime villain for Stark. Samuel L. Jackson should have been replaced as Nick Fury. When I watch him in action, I see that exact same character from every other movie he has ever played in. I do not see that seriousness canon with Nick Fury at all. When I saw Spider-Man, I did not see Willem Dafoe, I saw the Green Goblin, when I saw the Dark Knight, I did not see Heath Ledger, I saw the Joker, and so on with the heroes and side characters in those movies as well. On the plus side, Rourke wasn't bad and Downey Jr was still great. Favreau really didn't do a bad job though, I enjoyed how he managed to still make Stark's life interesting, by reminding us that even outside of the armor Stark is always fighting. I also give him credit for paying homage to the Demon in the Bottle storyline, quite possibly the best arc in the Iron Man mythos.

The special effects were still very good and they made the action scenes so cool to watch. The addition of War Machine added to the battles, as both Iron Man and War Machine tore through enemy robots during a good action filled segment. Scarlett Johannson as Natalie Rushman, aka Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, put together some decent hand to hand segments. My only issue is that they tried too hard to make her look cool.

Iron Man 2 is still pretty enjoyable. It in no way compares to the first movie despite more Iron Man action. Fans of action movies may more than likely get into it, fans of the comic I don't really know. There were somethings that bothered me, still, I can't say that I harbor any dislike for it. Give it a shot if you enjoyed the first movie or just plain love superheroes.

The movie has a 125 minute run time

Pros:
-Some cool action and special effects,

Cons:
-Plot wasn't as strong this time around, some uninteresting characters and interactions

The first film soared so high, any follow up would have been tough. This one needed a little more action and a little less Paltrow for me since I couldn't stand her in this one. Great to see War Machine on screen and I like Don Cheadle more. At least he didn't have the Mike Tyson voice Howard had.

Exactly, more action would have definitely helped it out. I was bored most of the time.

I agree with ya man on this one, the second film was a bit of a let down. For me it felt a little 2 long for some reason, Downey and Rourke were excellent here.

It was probably because of the redundancy in some areas why it felt longer. This sequel almost felt unnecessary.

Great review! I noticed several production mistakes and errors with the race track scene as well as no one really watching the Whiplash/Iron Man fight, but just milling around! Errors on the green screen apparently. What I liked best was the whole "daddy issue" thing as well as the live life to its fullest now since you'll be dead tomorrow. Also disappointed the scenes from the trailer were not on the film. Hope to see the DVD version to see if there were any missing scenes. :)  I don't remember right now but I think I gave it five stars for the entertainment value, the fact that it was not a fanboy shoot-em-up film and had some serious themes -- and I loved the Widow look, LOL.

It had a few good themes there and I liked the references to Demon in a Bottle. But this sequel almost felt unnecessary.

This was...alrght I guess, but I had issues with the way the story went. Good action but we both know action lacking in emotional investment means nothing....nice review! One more review I am waiting for....(I have a feeling it is coming)

I haven't seen this one yet but, I may just wait until it hits HBO. I did enjoy the first one and it's a bummer that this one didn't live up to it....alas, the fate of many a sequel.

I still recommend checking it out anyway. You might like it more than I did.

*** out of ****     The sequel to Jon Favreau's near-perfect "Iron Man" turns out to be pretty darn good, mostly thanks to the directorial talents of Mr. Favreau himself. Since it's nigh impossible to make a sequel to "Iron Man" and make it nearly as impressive and refreshing as the original film, Favreau decides to use what he's got. And he presents "Iron Man 2", in all its star-studded, CGI-happy glory, in the most passionate way possible. If you've heard that "Iron Man 2" …

…well, not exactly, although “Iron Man 2” is definitely your Hollywood fare that relies on being loud, “spiffy”, brisk popcorn entertainment but it does do it well; its uninspired plot mechanics render this sequel a step backward. The first film (personally that was NOT the Tony Stark I remember) while not perfect had better plot development and didn’t rely on being “spiffy” too much but focused more on characterization. …

Superhero movies have a strange formula to them that, for the most part, has served it well for the past decade.  The first movie spends quite a bit of time on the origin of the hero and thus it's usually not quite as interesting as the first sequel.  Once we get to the first sequel we've passed the "how" someone became a hero and usually the "why," so the bigger focus is usually on a nemesis to the hero and perhaps digging a little deeper into the hero's own story, …

Forgive the parlance, but I can't think of a better name for an irresponsible man who gets loaded, straps on a suit of destructive armor and starts using his laser beams to trick shoot fruit and vases in a crowded room full of people.  Tony may have seen the error of his ways in the first movie but with those troubles behind him theres plenty of room for his fast lifestyle and inner jerk to come out in this one.      Iron Man 2 is THE most anticipated Summer movie of …

Iron Man 2 takes off at a thounsand miles per hour and doesn't slow down.....
When "Iron Man" was released  in the early summer of 2008 it took the box-office and critics for a ride they would soon never forget, its huge critical and commercial success  and Robert Downey Jr.'s natural charm and appeal as the hero Tony Stark  landed this  larger than life comic book adaptation amongst the ranks  of greats such as Tim Burton's "Batman" and "Batman Returns", Christopher Nolan's "Batman reboot "Batman …

Sequels have a tendency to be on the mixed reaction of results. In the case of Marvel films (Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic 4, Hulk), it's a hit or miss. Regardless, we still love those comic book heroes in their adaptations. As with all comic book adaptations, they all loosely follow the comics per panel.      Iron Man 2 continues the origin story of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) as he continues to rise and protect the world from evil in his armor powered suit. Now that he has …

The United States government is now demanding of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) that he hand over his advanced armor technology to the military. Stark publically refuses in a fashion that gets him a lot of negative attention. Though one day Stark is attacked by a man named Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) who has technology of his own that might be on its way to being able to defeat Stark. Vanko now possibly has the technology to make a suit even stronger, and more advanced than Stark's. Meanwhile, …

Plenty of action. Plenty of drama, partying, flirting. But it lacked the heart of the first film (pardon the pun) and felt more choppy and predictable. There was one very satisfying relational moment, but other than that, I felt pretty indifferent and glad I didn’t hand over the moulah to see it in the theater. I’d suggest trying before buying.

If the turnout tonight is any indication of how popular Iron Man is this movie is in no danger of flopping. Iron Man was a comic book I picked up to try to get into something long ago as a kid. I wasn't completely familiar with the whole story, but that's what these movies are really designed to do. Initiate the public into the fantastic and interesting worlds of the comic books.      Most everyone already knows what this movie will entail from the previews. Mickey Rourke? Check. …

Not as bad as you think.
Your right its not as good as the first, but it aint that bad.          I think most people didnt like Ironman 2 beacause this movie although called Ironman focused mainly on Tony Stark. The stress from the US Government, the stress of being Ironman and running Stark Industries, and lets not forget The Arc reactor in his chest is killing him. But even through all this we still got a bunch of action and lots of laughs. Ironman 2 was a great …

Tony Stark has revealed his identity as Iron Man and is resisting calls by the United States Government to hand over the technology. Ivan Vanko has also duplicated the technology and built weapons of his own, creating new challenges for Stark.

After the high-flying adventures of the firstIron Manpicture, the billionaire arms manufacturer and irrepressible bon vivant Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) finds himself nursing a hangover. But not like any hangover he's had before: this one is toxic, a potentially deadly condition resulting from heavy metals (or something) bleeding out of the hardware he's installed in the middle of his chest. This is the problem Stark needs to solve inIron Man 2, not to mention the threat from resentful Russian science whiz Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), whose father helped create the Iron Man technology. There's an even bigger problem for the film: the need to set up a future Marvel Comics movie universe in which a variety of veteran ...
