Movie Background Uma Thurman plays the part of a blind college student at a private school in California. Andy Garcia is the burnt out policeman from LA that has moved for a quieter life after the death of his wife. There is a serial killer, with a penchant for lovely young ladies, that has been stumping the local police force for months. Garcia and police friend, Lance Henriksen, stake out the college suspecting Thurman is the next Jennifer' to meet the killer. After being knocked unconscious, Garcia wakes to find Henriksen dead, shot by Garcias' gun, and he is arrested for murder. So much for the quiet life.
How I thought the actors did Compelling performances by Thurman and Garcia, basically two souls isolated from life. Garcia gives a fantastic performance as a man haunted not only by his grief but also the destruction of life he has viewed in his job. Thurman is breathtaking in her ability to make you believe she is blind. I have always been entranced by an actors ability to ignore others on the set when portraying a deaf or blind person. NO, NO, don't tell me how they do it!
John Malkovich introduces a remarkable performance as the FBI agent investigating Henriksen's murder. Sometimes he can be quite chilling in a part and trust me, I wouldn't want him questioning me. Henriksen and Kathy Baker offer fine support with their love/hate, trust/distrust role with Garcia.
Why I liked this particular flick There was enough intrigue to keep you interested. You suspect but never fully realize who the true serial killer is. I liked the interaction between Baker and Garcia when she decided to bail him out of jail because SHE believed in his innocence.
I liked the vulnerable part Garcia played - kind of enthralled with Thurman but still in love with his wife as well. I liked the way he dug in and went after the killer when the others had basically written the case off as unsolvable.
I really liked Thurman in this part, she was very convincing, and hey - not a bad look either. There were enough chilling scenes to make you jump once in a while - well, face it, I just like gory flicks!

A beautiful blind woman (Uma Thurman) may be the only witness to a string of grisly murders. But when she fears she may be the next victim, detective John Berlin (Andy Garcia) finds himself in a situation messier than the killer's last crime scene.
