Another Mindless Sandler Film

  • Jul 28, 2011
Rating:
+1
There are Adam Sandler films that are pretty good (Funny People, Spanglish, Click) and there are others that are among the slew of mindless comedys (Don't Mess with the Zohan, The Backup Plan, Grown-ups and just about any Ashton Kutcher film). This film is among the latter. The only thing missing from this poor excuse of a comedy is Rob Schneider who usually is mandatory in a Sandler vehicle.

The movie opens with Sandler as Danny donning the most fake looking nose this side of Cyrano, learning that his bride to be is not really in love with him and only marrying him because he is going to be a doctor. He skips out of the wedding and goes to a bar to drown his sorrows looking at the wedding band he was going to wear. When a woman sits down next to him and likes him because she assumes he is married (seeing him with the wedding band) because he is the only guy in the bar not hitting on her. He ends up leaving the bar with the woman and deciding to always keep the ring on because it helps to meet women.

Several years later he has perfected lying and going on one-night stands as a rule. He has become a successful plastic surgeon working with Katherine (Jennifer Aniston) and has also had his own surgery to reduce his schnoz. He decides to dump his routine when he meets Palmer (keeping the ring in his pants pocket). After an night spent with Palmer, she finds the ring in his pants and accuses him of lying to her by not telling her he is married. He tries to protest but she is put off. Later Katherine persuades him to just go with it and pretend to be married.

His lying has him going to Hawaii with Palmer along with Katherine posting as his ex-wife and her kids posing as his kids with his cousin posing as Katherine's boyfriend. The rest of the movie is very predictable with Danny bonding with Katherine's kids and Danny and Katherine slowly building feelings for each other. This movie is not the absolute worst that I have seen (Zohan was probably the worst Sandler flick) but it is still another in a slew of forgettable comedies that Sandler has put. out.

Half a star out of ****     Here's how things are; I rarely smile - let alone laugh - when I see a comedy these days, because most of them just aren't funny. I believe we are running out of intelligence and genius in this field, and all of the previous masters of the genre are dying. It's difficult to laugh when something isn't clever, but it's OK to giggle. After all, laughter is a gift; it can't come out of our little mouths every time we see a comedy film. But I'd at least …

Star Rating:         Is there anything more infuriating than a comedy plot that wouldn’t pass muster in a sitcom? Just Go with It – which is, believe it or not, a remake of the 1969 film Cactus Flower – tells a story so contrived, artificial, and unfunny that if it were a television pilot, it would in all likelihood be locked in a studio vault and allowed to disintegrate into oblivion. It’s one of those sad situations in which an engaging premise …

I might be a bit biased about this because I have a personal sympathy for Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler but I found this movie entertaining, simple and relaxing. These are all characteristics that most romcoms these days lack in. They all try too much to be either funny, either too romantic, either too complex and suffer from the storytelling point of view but this film, while it's a typical romcom it still delivers more than expected. But let's go into slicing this bread …
