An iconic and favourite movie for every child who grew up in the 80's, LABYRINTH now enchants a whole new generation of fans on DVD. Feeling ignored and unappreciated by her stepmother, Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) rashly wishes her new baby brother Toby into the clutches of Jareth, the Goblin King (David Bowie). Realising her folly, Sarah must enter the magical twist-turning Labyrinth and continue through to the Goblin City if she has any hope of rescuing Toby. But Sarah won't be alone, as she is joined by a motley crew of lovable characters like grumpy Hoggle and kind Ludo.

As Sarah travels deeper and deeper into the Labyrinth, Jareth springs several traps in her path, testing her powers of love, loyalty and bravery.
Beautifully-brought to life by Jim Henson and his Muppet crew, the creatures of LABYRINTH still amaze with their design and believability. The performances of the main stars, Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie, likewise are perfectly in keeping with the fantasy element of the story. Believe it or not, but Jennifer Connelly was barely 14 when she did this film. Her performance largely carries the film. The centrepiece sequence of the film, where Sarah dreams she is attending a ball and dances with Jareth to "As the World Falls Down", is beautifully-shot with Jennifer Connelly luminous in a silvery white ballgown, and others in grotesque Commedia dell'Arte style masks.
The script by MONTY PYTHON's Terry Jones is very witty and clever with homages to "The Wizard of Oz" and other fantasy stories. David Bowie's songs form an integral part of the story with "Underground", "Dance Magic" and "Chilly Down" becoming anthems for the Jareth character.
The DVD includes an informative featurette, "Inside the Labyrinth", which was made to publicise the film prior to it's original release, and includes interviews with Terry Jones, Jim Henson, Brian Henson, Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie.
Well-worth another look for 80's kids and newcomers alike.

Pros: So old, it's just good fun to watch. Cons: So old, you'll probably be laughing and saying, "Oh man, it's so old." The Bottom Line: Ok, it is old, but it is also a lot of fun. I love the work of Jim Henson. I enjoy watching the movies and television programs he produced and directed because he was a great film maker and puppeteer. Many of his creations are loveable and some are stunning. However, the main reason I love the work of Jim Henson is because he was a great storyteller who he knew how to tell fairy tales right.Most people today get their idea of fairy tales from the watered down Disney variety. The plot revolves around Sarah's quest to rescue her little brother from the Goblin King while trapped in a world that is an enormous otherworldly maze. In real life she has to baby-sit her brother and contend with parents who don't understand her at all.
