Constantine, Queen of the damned, Drag me to hell, Underworld, House on haunted hill, The Amityville horror, An American Haunting, The haunting in Connecticut, The ring, The grudge, The Omen, The Hills have eyes, 1408, Ghost Ship, Jeepers Creepers, Halloween, Darkness Falls, Silent hill, etc I could go on and on and on. None of the movies I’ve named or could name even come close to Paranormal Activity.
If you’ve read my Drag me to hell review then you know that for a long time I’ve been looking for a horror movie to really scare the hell outta me, one that will keep me up at night, one that will make me want to keep the lights on, the way the original Evil dead did to me. Unfortunately none of the movies listed above made me scared of the dark again.
Now I fear my quest will never be complete, eventually I hear of this “found camera” type movie called Paranormal Activity, critics say “it’s terrifying” “it’s the scariest movie ever” “you will loose sleep”. Obviously I don’t believe them because they said the same things for most of the movies I’ve got listed. So what changed my mind you ask? Well it was word of mouth, I talked to some people who watched the movie and they all basically said the same thing “its super scary” one person even said they “left the theater” Now I was interested, and because I usually don’t take peoples word for it I decided to see for myself just how scary this movie was.
Paranormal Activity tells the story of Katie and Micah, a young couple who’s just moved into a new house in San Diego California. Katie revels that a ghostly presence has been haunting her since she was a child and that she thinks it has followed them to their new house. In response to this Micah begins to film the couple as they sleep to catch as strange phenomena. Over the course of 21 days they are witness, and subjected to many paranormal and eventually violent attacks by an unseen force.
So the mood was set, everything was perfect, my grandparents were out at a baby Shower so I had the house to myself, the sun was setting and it was raining outside. An added bonus I had recently used some cleaning chemicals in my room the day before so despite the rain I opened my window to let the room air out. With the window open the wind kept moving my door (AWESOME) Let the fright begin.
Right now I’ am writing this as the DVD credits go by; the house is dark, my room door closed the lights on, and the winds picking up a little outside. It’s been 10 minutes since the movie ended and I still have this tense feeling all over. For once the critics were right, this movie did send chills down my spine, I did turn on the lights, and while it isn’t much I did lose a little sleep over this movie. Paranormal Activity is a truly freighting film. The film goes from mundane, to creepy, to un-nerving, to terrifying and eventually disturbing. The movie blends both the in your face loud/sudden horror with the subtle quiet “so scared you cant breath” horror. And it works very well from low humming sounds, and mysterious shadows being cast to loud door slamming and banging.
Not only the filming and effects but the actor’s performances were top notch, if anything its their performance that made to movie even scarier especially Katie Featherston’s (Katie) she did a damn fine job and I hope to see her in other film projects.
So if your looking for a scary movie, I mean a truly scary, grip your seat WTF, OMG, turn on the lights kinda movie then look no further than Paranormal Activity. It’s the best horror movie I have seen in years, and I think you will agree also. Get it watch it and get scared.
